Crystal Park Montana

Two weeks ago I went to Crystal Park in Montana. Not knowing quite what to do I started digging in the same Golpher Holes that others had in the past. It was very difficult to tell what was tailings and what was new ground. I did find a few nice crystals with my trusty screen and shovel. Any pointers from the pros would be greatly appreciated. I have a neighbor who found a huge smokey out there when he was very young. I had dreams of finding a similar prize.

happy hunting!

Just keep digging. Dig deeper and move as much material as possible. Look for quartz veins or iron oxide staining, follow these.

Good luck!

I will try that next time I get there. Hopefully sooner than later.

Thank you!

I visited the park on the 4th of July and had about the same luck as your picture showed. There are abundant small crystals. Like you stated though, it was hard to tell if you were just digging piles of dirt someone else had due through already. I was also surprised by the amount of trees knocked over and the holes dug so close to the walkways. As you enter those are the two biggest rules they have posted.

Some friends and I went up there last summer for a couple of days and had great luck. lots of quartz and some smoking and some purple some 2inches in length and 1 to 1/2 in across. smiling smiley went home with about 20# pounds of crystals

Here's one fresh out of the dirt in late June 2012

Ian's advice above on how to find is spot on, I'll add that it took 4 days of digging before I found the one pictured above. Not the biggest or best I ever found there but it made me happy. No guarantees of finding nice stuff there, but with diligence comes reward.

Jim,

That is an awesome find! I have to go up to Montana a few more times this year. I need to budget a few days to look for crystals. I really was shooting from the hip when I went. It is good to have the advice of vetrans.

Thanks guys!
