Cool! I've seen (and collected) a few pieces like this from the Warm Springs resovoir area south of Juntura, Oregon, but I guess I never really appreciated them. I've always preferred the non-etched, clear crystals. Those are nice examples though. I've always wondered what causes the etching; is it natural erosion through acidic soil or precipitation?

My Juntura Warm Springs etched calcite specimen, from eastern Oregon. I picked this up about a year ago, and, I dunno, it's starting to grow on me. It is interesting to see how the etchings have eroded a series of parallel grooves across the face of the crystal at regular intervals, forming what looks like a series of parallel plates.

I really DIG ancient crystals from rugged localities. I have created a few more photgraphs for the Mindat communities enjoyment.
I plan on cataloging my collection of SW Missouri Calcites that are all from the same pocket, most of the crystals are floaters. The Ozark Plateau is a rugged and beautifull place. I love the way these Calcite crystals look and form, it's amazing. I plan on creating an article for Mindat about Missouri Calcite and the beauty of this FINE mineral.
Matt Ciranni - Your Oregon Calcites are very nice and I truly enjoyed looking at them.
