Techniques for Collectorsremoving tarnish from galenite

7th Aug 2012 09:43 UTCMartin Slama Expert

I have an old specimen from Bulgaria with Galenite cubes up to 1cm in a large vug. Is there a possibility to remove a tarnish from Galenite?

Sadly no. If there was every galena offered for sale would be brilliant.

The tarnish on galenite can be removed - but the result may not what you expect... Oxalic acid will weaken it to a point where it can be removed with toothpaste and a toothbrush.... At least it worked for the specimens I have tried it - that does not mean that they look very nice afterwards - just "clean".

Best Regards

May we see a picture of the galena crystals you wish to clean?

I deal with Bulgarian Galena formore than eight years. No,there is no way to clean the tarnish.Any known method ends with rubbing. The result is a scratched Galena and the trimmer gets the impression the crystals are cleaned. The truth is that layers of crystal have been removed...

This is the reason some specimens are very expensive and others are cheaper, although they are similar.Checking two specimens together one can check the slighest difference in luster.

Also, some very lustrous specimens lose luster easily and others don't.Depends on the find, when all other factors are constant.
