Techniques for Collectorswhat to use to stabilize an earthy, powdery or sandy matrix

2nd Feb 2008 19:50 UTCDieter Obrecht

hi,

i have a lot of Wulfenite / Mimetite specimen from the Ojuela, Mexico.

most of them have an earthy, dusty or sandy matrix.

which ist the best way to stabilize this kind of matrix to prevent

the minerals or mineral groups from falling off the sticky mineral tack.

i have tried cellulose laquere but it becomes to shiny and obvious when dry.

is anything else recommended?

thanks for helping,

Dieter

I've been using Elmer's, diluted 1/2 & 1/2 w/ water.....but I'm going to try hair-spray...if I can direct a small enough stream!!

thank you for all your replies. i will try the diluted woodglue (which you call Elmer's) - i guess it is a pva glue which is later soluble in water and removable if wanted. Don,Alfredo: i also will give the hairspray idea a go and have an add. idea: will try to cut an appr. hole into a shielding piece of paper. putting the paper very close to the matrix (to reduce the focus behind the hole) and than spraying through it. .... i thought on hairspray already earlier but we have none around in the house .... ;)
