Photo of whom mineral is named after

avatar
Jolyon & Katya Ralph June 24, 2009 11:54PM
New feature added - we can now show a photo of the person for whom the mineral is named after next to the description of the name.

So - now I'm looking for some help.

Do you have photos of people who have had minerals named after them? In particular people from the last 50 years or so of mineralogy?

If you do, please upload it to your gallery, photo type as OTHER and subtype personal photo. Add a description about who it is and where it was taken.

Then you'll have an ID number in your photo in the URL shown at the top, eg

photo-184532.html

In this case, 184532 is the photo ID.

So please do that, then comment to this thread and say:

"i've uploaded photo id 184532 of Mr XXXXXX to put on the page of XXXXite"

and I'll do the rest!

Thanks.

You can also upload photos/paintings/illustrations of historical figures as well!

I've already done:

Torbernite
Smithsonite
Goethite
Sillimanite

Wikipedia is a good source for these. If you're uploading you can copy/paste the URL for the image into the new 'copy from somewhere else on the web' box and upload it without needing to copy to your computer first. If you do this DO NOT FORGET to set the copyright status to PUBLIC DOMAIN for these images. Only use images that are marked on Wikipedia as public domain (ie paintings/illustrations earlier than around 1920)

Jolyon,

There is usually a group photograph taken every year at the Rochester Symposium of attendees who have minerals named after them, I don't know where they are archived or the copyright status, but it is worth looking into. The other source of pictures would be the memorial articles in American Mineralogist as well as other mineralogical journals. Back issues of American Mineralogist prior to 2000 are available on line.

I don't have a mindat account, but here are four old, public domain images from wikipedia:
Carl Wilhelm Scheele (scheelite)
Johan Gadolin (gadolinite)
Jacobus Henricus van't Hoff (vanthoffite)
John Wesley Powell (powellite)

Are you only including minerals directly named after people? Columbite, for example, is distantly named after Christopher Columbus.

Hi Jolyon,

John Ebner has a substantial collection of micros mounted by the person after whom the mineral was named. He also has a collection of mineral memorabilia. He might be a good resource also.

I saw John Ebner's collection at Rochester this year - very impressive!

There's a list on wikipedia:

I've updated up to Armalcolite for those where there are images on Wikipedia already.

Anne Sabina of sabinaite is 5 floors below me. I can take a pic of her today, probably.

I can get a new photo of Gilles Haineault in a few months.

Also Carleton University.

I should have mentioned earlier that yes, it's fine to have photos of places, not just people! This will be great, thank's Tony

The Mineralogical Record has a fairly nice shot of Wilhelm Maucher (Maucherite) and his wife Frieda on the page
http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=322
which perhaps they might allow to be used?

The shop he founded 100 years ago still exists; they have a (rather dark) photo of a painting on their own site:
http://www.kristallgarten-maucher.de/2.html
I could ask them about it next time I'm there.

Mark Gottlieb June 25, 2009 04:46PM
I took a look at the list on Wikipedia. it has "larimar" on it; named after some woman. Is anyone up to fixing it? As most of you know, larimar is a trade name for blue pectolite.
avatar
Uwe Kolitsch June 25, 2009 05:08PM
"It was not until 1974 when at the foot of the Bahoruco Range, the coastal province of Barahona, a flash of blue in the beach sand caught the attention of Miguel Méndez and Peace Corps volunteer Norman Rilling and they scooped down to rediscover larimar. Natives, who believed the stone came from the sea, called the gem Blue Stone. Miguel promptly took his young daughter's name Larissa and the Spanish word for the sea (mar) and formed Larimar, by the colors of the water of the Caribbean Sea, where it was found."
avatar
Jolyon & Katya Ralph June 25, 2009 06:46PM
I've removed it from the page on Wikipedia (As Uwe points out, the etymology is correct but it doesn't belong on a page of minerals named after people)

I've uploaded photo id 237981 of Steve Rust to put on the page of steverustite.

See also the book "Mineral Species Discovered in Canada" by Laszlo Horvath. Many people photos in there - and its a nice book.
As Bob Martin (martinite) is the editor of this volume he may be a useful contact for photos.

Jolyon,

I can probably cover many Canadians as my book (the one Andy mentioned above) had photos of nearly all the Canadians who had minerals named after them. My problem is that many have or may have copyright or permission issues that I will have to check. Some of the permissions for the use of the photos covered the book only, and some of the living may be touchy about their image being on a website. This will take time to sort out. Marco Ciriotti et al. just published a new book "Italian type minerals" which has numerous photos, but I suspect that they will have similar problems with copyrights etc.

Do I need to reload them in this different category, or can they be linked somehow?

I think this is a great addition and that the historical aspect of minerals is often overlooked.

How about doing a picture of the location for minerals that are named after their locality. Minerals such as Tinticite (Tintic Standard Mine, Eureka, Utah), Utahite & Juabite (Centennial Eureka Mine, Juab County, Utah). There are many others as well.

I just came across this thread while at work, but it made me think. I have been getting older issues of Rocks and Minerals magazine lately, and I recall that in some of the older issues, they had a "Who's Who in Mineral Names" section. This usually had a small article on an older mineral name, and a small article on a more recent mineral name. I am not sure how many of the people in these articles have already been covered, or if this has already been mentioned, but this might be a good source, though I don't know the exact process to be able to use the photos involved.

"Minerals with belgian roots-From hopeite(1824) to tazieffite (2009)"

by E. Van Der Meersche, P. De Paepe and G. Stoops
Academia Press, 2010, Ghent, 231 pp. (ISBN 978 90 382 1531 0)

shows portraits of people after whom minerals discovered in Belgium have been named (Part I), and of Belgians after whom minerals discovered abroad have been named (Part II). About 120 sections are comprised of a biographical sketch, a bibliography, crystallographic drawings, and fine pictures of the concerned mineral species.
