Similar localities linked together?

Similar localities linked together?
August 13, 2009 12:24AM
Hi, just got an idea: the localities with similar minerals and/or similar geological genesis could be linked, i.e. by adding a "sub-desk" called "similar localities". This, I think, could faciliate checking another occurences of particular species.

Thanks,

Luke K.

I know that both the Canadian Geologic Survey and the US geological survey have codes for deposit types (but I'm pretty sure they don't match each other). In the USGS MRDS database, only about 5% of the localities are categorized.

Mindat does have an associated mineral search, where you can find locations that have minerals in common.

You're right - I didn't notice that possibility (-;

Thanks!

Most Geological Survey organisations have mineral deposit databases with geological classification of deposits - eg veins, skarns, greisens etc, but there is little consistency. But the Australian states at least are trying to get their databases all merged together, so thats a start
