Improving Mindat.orgPhotomicrograph images / videos
29th Jan 2015 14:18 UTCChristopher Brough
The mindat optical properties resource is a wonderful tool but I was wondering if it could be added to with typical videos of mineral properties under the microscope. The concern I guess would be the inherent variation to mineral development and what constitutes 'typical' but many minerals have a fairly restricted development under the microscope and it could add another layer of information, particularly for optical microscopists such as myself.
The videos themselves could be shown on loop in much the same way as a vine video or possibly be rotatable feature like the crystallographic atlas. The Virtual microscope (http://www.virtualmicroscope.org/) does a good job with some typical or interesting lithologies but maybe mindat could be focussed in single mineral properties?
In terms of taking the videos the most useful (albeit time-consuming) method is to take an image every 5 degrees and then stitch the images together as a video. At 5 degrees the eye doesn't pick up the transitions and the video runs smoothly.
I have one example from an oxy-schorl grain which I was using a tool to explain pleochroism.
Regards,
Chris
