Hi all, here is the skinny on the fate of the Montrose Occurence which I recently read in the paper. After a 2 year hold on the projects they are going ahead presumably in the fall sometime, possibly in the spring of 2010. They will be building three 100,000 + sq foot buildings on the site. A Lowes superstore, Canadian Tire and a Walmart superstore.. Time is short, lets get whatever we can before it's all gone..

Thanks for the info, Andrew. Pickings are slim there right now but it is still possible to find something good! I found one nice blue fluorite there a month and a half ago. Still needs the final trim.

Cheers,
David K. Joyce

Hey Andrew
do you live anywhere near Hamilton?
I am going to be there at the end of Sept early Oct. and would love a chance to go with someone to
Montrose...what are the chances?

Hi Ray - if timing permits, we'd love to be part of the outing. This could be one of those unofficial Mindat field trips!

If i got some time then, i would not mind hooking you with you all also. Could be the one last rush before the site is gone for good.

Terrible news! Pulled some fabulous things out of there this spring... but now it's too damn hot. Do you know exactly where they're building, Andrew? On the big hill, or all around it, or?

Damn you progress!

Hey Ray, I live in St Catherines, 15 minutes away from the occurence. I'm sure I could sneak out for a trip. If we can organize it we all could go. Tim, I'm pretty sure the area where I met you, Maggie and Reiner (think that's his name?) is where the Walmart and Lowes is going. That would be two 100,000 sq ' buildings and then the parking lots.. both those buildings would take up that whole area.

If I can get away when you schedule the trip, I would also be interested. When I was there in May, I didn't have any luck with the fluorites. I wanted to try my luck on more time before it's closed.

Hi All,

I've never been and would love the chance to check it out before it's gone! It's know it's been a while since anyone's posted here but I just stumbled across it. I'd like to be kept in the loop if such a trip does happen. I was just chatting with Ray and he'll be coming soon, so Mindat field-trippers unite!

Why don't we try for a weekend in late Sept or early Oct. Its cooling off now so would be nice for collecting.. My schedule is open for a Sat or Sun outing. I'm only 15 minutes away but I know some of you are quite a drive away. Lets try for a set date and see if we can get a decent group together?

What about Saturday, October 3rd? Or the 4th if that's better. I'm coming from Minden (3 1/2~4hrs) but I'll either stay with friends the night before or leave early and meet you all there.

Michael,

P.S. How did things work out for you with that uraninite, Andrew?

October 3,4 would be fine with me. If any of you have an alternate date go ahead an ask. I live about an hours away so any time is good with me as long as there is some warning. If there will be a lot of us there we might be able to break up some of the large boulders with sledges or cutting tools and get some nice crystals hidden within.thumbs up smiley. This could be "The last gold rush before the road freezes for winter" at Montrose for good.

The Ancaster show is that weekend - we are covering our club's table Saturday morning - perhaps we will swing by on Saturday afterwards, or we can also make the trip on Sunday... in other words, either day is good for us!

I was able to clear things and can also make it out. If I had to pick a preference, I would say Sunday.

Anyone still up for it?

Saturday is a go for me as well. Sunday I have to work. What time shall we meet up? As Michael is coming from Minden how bout 8-9am? I would also recomend parking on the street that runs off of Montrose. I think it's Kinsmen Court, it's the road that goes to the Go-Karts. You'll see quite a few Transport trucks parked there as well. It's just a very short walk from there.

I cashed in a few more favours with my Wife. I'm in for Saturday as well.

Is the easiest access from Kinsmen Court near the top where it intersects with Montrose Rd?

Looking forward to meeting you all.

That's right Andrew, you'll see the Transport trucks. The collecting site is directly across the street from the parking area.. I guess it doesn't matter if we're all there at a set time. See ya there.
