Hi,

Have any of you PA collectors ever collected at the Christian Armitage Farm near Stroudsberg, PA? The location was listed in Russel P. McPHall's book as a quartz collecting site. My wife and I collected this specimen at the farm in 1968. Have any of you PA collectors visited the location recently? I remember paying Mr. Armitage a collecting fee while he was feeding his dairy cattle. We never returned to the farm.

Joe, could you buy produce at this place? I seem to recall a post here that fit your desecription of a farm, a produce stand and some nice Quartz specimens.

I was just curious to find out if any collectors have gone there recently. Quite a few houses have been built in the area and I think the farm no longer exists. I might take a ride up there in the future when we have a nice weekend. Please keep in touch and have a happy holiday.

I found an old field trip sheet from the North Jersey Mineralogical Society for this location from 1956. I attempted to follow the routing given, but was not able to. It showed many turns being made at various barns, but most of them are gone now. One of the landmarks given on the sheet was to turn right at "a large pile of chicken feathers"!! I checked, and yep, the feathers were gone. LOL..... Anyway, I gave the sheet to Bob Santee to see if he could figure it out. It would be neat to find and resurrect this site again.

Very interesting you should mention that - I was up near the Wind Gap Ridge today with my rockhound colleague looking for Quartz, but no luck. I had prospected a few spots 7 miles west of the water gap, but did not make the time to go looking door-to-door. It would really help if we had a map or some specific directions to this place. I know a Geology professor that lives in the E.Stroudsburg area, but he is usually really busy and I haven't had the opportunity to field collect with him there yet. Can you provide any other details?

Well, both sheets refer to the same basic directions, up to a certain point. Then, because of modern development and such, the directions become tough to figure out. I do know that you follow Rt.191 south of Stroudsburg. Then you make a right turn at the fork in the road onto Cherry Valley Road and travel 1.5 miles. After that, the directions become fuzzy and the landmarks stated in both sets of directions are no longer there. There is a right turn in that vicinity called Longwood Road, which could have been one of the old farm roads mentioned, but I could not match any of the landmarks they referred to back then, especially the pile of chicken feathers!:-)
