rock hounding in nj,pa,de ??

any good spots known in pa ,nj or de closest to southern new jersey as possible,i live near philadelphia on the jersey side close to de as well ? im hitting the easton quarry soon ? thanks

Hi Jeff, you may want to look up info on Mulica Hill, NJ for phosphate minerals. I do not know what the status of collecting is at present have not been by there in years. Perhaps somebody else will chime in with current status info.

Mulica Hill is still a viable collecting spot. But unfortunately, my copy of Gem Trails of New Jersey and Pennsylvania disappeared so I can't furnish directions. If you get yourself a copy of the book, all will be revealed.

Can park by the Swim Club or on the street.

Mullica Hill was collectible as of last year. You can park in the swim club lot and walk down, I don't know if NJ had snow this weekend, but if so wait until a warming trend before going. When you park in the lot you will walk to the edge and notice a steep incline with a very small brook running throught the woods at the bottom. You'll want to switchback down the incline.The stream is where you will find the Vivivianite. Look for areas where the stream bends and rushing water might have made deposits on the bank that will have the nodules with the Vivianite inside. Look for elongated casts and smallish nodules that are showing some sign of blackish green. If memory serves what you are finding is fossil casts that have been replaced by the Vivianite. You will gently crack them open to find the mineral. The stream even at low water has a very thick and oozing kind of mud, so you will want muck boots or something waterproof. The stream banks have a blue tinged clay material which I believe is a result of the phosphates in the area. There are some other rare minerals that are found there, but if you come away with a few nodules with Vivianite then it is a good day.
