I was there last year. My advice is do not spend your time looking at the small weathered pieces of rock on the ground. You can then trim away some of the schist there and do the rest of the trimming at home. I found that the slope going down to the small pond was productive. Don't try to break the garnet crystals out of the bedrock.
It's a one-mineral location.

Greens is still open, but save your back and do not swing a big hammer, just dig down is the tailings piles for a foot or two. Tons of loose Garnets and lots of nice matrix specimens. Our club visits at least once a year and everyone always comes home happy. Also a great place for the kids as they can find plenty too. The only hassle is the owners dog likes to filch sandwiches and treats from you. BTW Van King is right, there are plenty of Staurolites there too, just mostly singles and less than 1/2 inch. As far as another location you can go to try some of the pegamatites in central CT like the Simpson Quarry. Our club found plenty of interseting "stuff" there last month to numerous to list.
