Anybody interested in looking for minerals in Southern NM?
July 09, 2012 09:57PM
Hello, I am new to Mindat and live in Las Cruces NM. I have traveled and searched the area for several years and wouldn't mind sharing some localities and going rockhounding. Right now it's a bit HOT for rockhounding, but in a couple months it will be ok. I have knowledge of some nice geode beds, flourite mines, travertine, and a really nice new area for petrified wood.

See you soon!

Great name Paul!! smileys with beer

Welcome to Mindat also! You're fortunate in that you already have someone contacting you who is willing and very knowledgable about that area of New Mexico in Don Saathoff. Another thought; if you haven't already, visit the Mineral Museum on the campus of New Mexico Tech in Socorro and talk with Dr. Virgil Leuth. He is also very helpful when it comes to New Mexico minerals. Lastly, the NM Bureau of Geology puts out a nice little paper about mineral collecting in New Mexico called the Rockhounding Guide to New Mexico which has several spots you can visit.

Good luck in your adventures.....

Paul Browning, Paul's advise is excellent!! The museum is an incredible resource and Virgil Lueth & Bob Eveleth are both incredibly valuable resources for the state. Also, keep the second weekend of November OPEN for the annual New Mexico Mineral Symposium at Tech.

Paul Brandes, (this could get confusing....Paul B & Paul B.....why I sign Don S to prevent Don Peck from getting blamed for my blunders!!!) Anyway, flattery will get you everywhere....now I'll have to repay you with a Nakye barite or something.....

Instead of a Nakye baryte, how about a refreshing beverage at Socorro Springs the next time I'm in town for the Symposium? winking smiley

Don, I will be traveling the next couple of weeks, thought I could make it out your way, but it doesn't look good. I won't be able to make the meeting on Friday, but I sure can make the meeting at your house the following wed. Thanks!
