Beginning facetor looking for faceting diagrams

Hello, I am looking for some good books, etc. with faceting diagrams for a beginning facetor. The wrinkle in this request is that my faceting machine only has 60 and 64 tooth index gears. I have found several diagrams for round cuts, but few diagrams for the many of other types of cuts.

faceters dot com has many facet diagrams. I'm not sure if they area all free but there are alot that are free.

you can definitely get facetting diagrams from the websites
and there are many books on facetting including the basics
from John Sinkankas from his books on gem cutting and facetting.
He was one of the premier cutters of many of the large stones found in
museums around North America, including the Royal Ontario, and The Smithsonian

Hi Mark. Try to get hold of "Faceting for amateurs", by Glen and Martha Vargas. This is the best book for beginners and the talented, not only does it show in detail the idividual designs but also the faceting angles for said.

Hi Mark,

If all the indexes in the instructions divided by 3 and multiplied by 2 results whole numbers then your 64 index will facet a 94 diagram. This greatly increases the number of cuts you can do.

Likewise if all the indexes in the instructions divided by 4 and multiplied by 3 results in whole numbers then your 60 index will facet a 80 diagram. I also have 64 and 60, but also a 96 index gear.

Designers tend to specify 96 or 80 indexes without noting that the designs can also be cut with other gears. Vargas and Soucup have index conversion diagrams in their books, but it is really simple arithmatic.

I have a made in the 60s new still in box facet-er. It came with only two index a 60 and a 64. I can no longer get parts and have looked for more index that may fit with no luck. I need diagrams using only 60 or 64 index. Can and will any one help me out?

If you find a 96 index design that you like you can divide each number by 3 then multiply by 2. If they come out to be even numbers you cut it on a 64 index

How about going to a machine shop and asking if they can make you a 96 Index wheel since you have the others, they very well may be able to do it.

I have foue index gears for my machine. I have cut over 6,000 stones and 90% have been with a 64 index. I like that number in that it reduces the number of teeth in the gear and you can see them better. Most of your basic cuts are available on the 64 index. Most of the time I switch from one gear to the other without looking at a guide. As you progress, you will be making your own diagrams. My experience is, most of the work that I do, involves making a stone to fit a piece of jerelry that no diagram will fit. Then there are the times that you have to repair a stone with few facets that are visable or that was cut on a jam peg of something and you have to arrange the facets by eye.
