Brazilian amethyst geode August 03, 2012 04:35AM |
Hi
A family member has inherited this geode, which we think is of Brazilian origin but no other details are known about its history. Can anyone give me an idea about the possible value. The overall dimensions are 44" x 18" x 8", dont know the weight but guess this could be around 200lbs. One one side I can see that there has been a crack which was repaired previously, see this in the photo.
Thanks if you can help.
Pete

Your amethyst geode and all similar large amethyst geodes are from underground amethyst mines near Ametista do Sul, Alto Uruguai region, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Specimens like yours are sold by the container load for $8 to $15 per kg. By the time they reach the retail dealers in Europe and the USA they are asking about four time that amount.

even at the last days of the sow in Tucson you are looking at at least $5 a kilo (double keystone) so local small dealer would pay about $500 or more and than he would triple the price and sell for what ever he can get, probably just over $1000. Fancy stores in a big city would be asking over $3000 and heally feelyes even more.
