GeneralAvatar Madness!

28th Jun 2008 18:05 UTCJolyon Ralph Founder

For those who don't know, the avatars are the pictures to the left here that are meant in some way to represent the poster. You can choose your own.

Hopefully the novelty will wear off soon and people will be reasonably sane with their choices! For now, I've chosen my avatar because I am the dictator of Mindat and I quite like Chicken.

Jolyon

28th Jun 2008 20:12 UTCCorie Mattar

Personally, I love this idea. I've already uploaded a few tiny pics of different pets, since I love them, and will swap them out periodically.

Thanks for this!

Avatar Madness? Enjoy my crack smoking pirate monkey!!!

Now, two things.

First of all, what is to stop someone like...me...from just making Avatars to advertise my websites, bypassing the banner system?

Second, I thought you were the prime minister of MinDat Jolyon! That changes the whole geo-political landscape now. What happened to the dreams of freedom? There is no emoticon suitable for my feelings in that array of smileys.

28th Jun 2008 22:27 UTCJesse Fisher Expert

Joylon,

Nice idea. Being your basic over educated misanthrope, cutsie stuff like smiley faces have always invoked a gag reflex when encountered. How do I add a suitably "distinctive" image of my own? But have no fear, I'll leave the crack-smoking pirate monkeys to Justin.

28th Jun 2008 22:49 UTCJolyon Ralph Founder

Justin,

I am sure it goes without saying that anyone caught trying to upload an advertising image of any kind as their avatar will be sent off to the gulags and stripped of all messageboard priviliges!

I assume that crack-smoking pirate monkeys are not directly related to your website, but I can never be sure.

Well sweet then, if it isn't noted somewhere you should make it available, because I'm thinking of many a person who frequents this board who would think nothing of it. I DON'T want to see someone getting kicked off or having some crazy regular of MinDat jump down someone's throat for a policy that is not stated. Good lord, I don't need to witness that.

Second of all, I think the crack smoking pirate monkey is, in a nutshell, an advertisment for RockhoundingVideos.com

And, can I ask that we keep naked women avatars off of Mindat, please? Every site forum I belong to has some juvenile posting naked women as though that is cool and all it does is make me think the guy posting is a drag queen.

Thanks!

Avatars are a great way of viewing the person's innermost character (maturity level).

29th Jun 2008 15:53 UTCUwe Kolitsch Manager

Peter's avator reflects that he's a chemist - and the lady is not naked (on a hot summer day you can have views like that on a normal street, at least in most parts of Europe I'd say).

29th Jun 2008 15:53 UTCRock Currier Expert

Dear Gail,

How about Peter's wonderful avatar of the lady chemist. I dreamed about someone like her for all those years I worked in chemical laboratories and production facilities but never found. You wouldn't take her away from me would you?

Jolyon,

Just to be sure. If I upload a 'commercial' avatar would you send my avatar to the GULag or would you send ME to the GULag?

If you would sent me I have some suggestions: Khibiny, Lovozero, Magadan oblast, Norilsk...... all former GULags I'd love to visit some day.

(All jokes aside, I did visit a former GULag on Kamchatka and it is pretty impressive)

29th Jun 2008 16:15 UTCDavid Von Bargen Manager

If you really don't like to look at the avatars, there is an option in your user control to turn off the display of the avatars (a check box below your avatarsd when in the avatar section).

29th Jun 2008 17:01 UTCJoan Kureczka

How about a tiny naked Rogerley fluorite fairy, borrowed from Sarah's painting (Sarah -- if you prefer I not use this, just let me know!)

29th Jun 2008 17:07 UTCFred E. Davis

Although I'm not a real big beryl kinda guy, the one in my avatar is dear to my heart - it's a miracle mineral. I was checking a big pile of crushed stone from the old Howe quarry in Portland, CT. I'd pick a piece up, turn it over to check it out & toss it back (leaverite). This piece looked like all the rest until I turned it over. Staring back at me was a terminated, undamaged beryl about 2.4 cm across! Gemmy? Heck no, but anything that could survive a crusher and come out unscathed is an inspiration.

Actually you can take most any photo you have on file and use an online program to shrink it to the size for an avatar. For instance the following link will accomplish this: http://www.shrinkpictures.com/create-avatar/

AVATARS - Upload a new avatar

Please do not upload avatars larger than 25 KB and 100 x 100 pixels.

Only the following file types are allowed for avatars: gif, png, jpg.

You can store at most 5 avatars.

On the control panel's avatar section, you upload photos to the system for your avatar. It should show the pixel size and file size for your avatar selections.

What I find rather perverse is that an image of a woman with partially exposed breasts will provoke controversy while crack-smoking pirate monkeys and maching-gun firing kittens do not. I don't think female breasts have ever caused nearly the amount of harm to society that highly adictive drugs and firearms have.

We already have a rule (number 1) in the forum banning any offensive content on the site. This applies equally for choice of avatars. We have very few problems on the message board considering how many people use it, so I don't expect there to be any real problems to worry about.

Most photo editors have a function that lets you set the jpeg compression factor. For my photo I sied it to 100x100 pixels and saved as a jpeg image with 75% compression factor. This gave me a 5.5KB file size.

You then need to click on one of the rows for "select avatar" to pick one to use. Then click the "save changes button"
