First off; welcome to Mindat, Ashton!!
As far as tips, one of the first things you can do is purchase a good rock/mineral book. Some good ones include Simon & Schusters "Rocks and Minerals" or Schumann's "Rocks, Minerals, and Gemstones". Another good idea is to join a local mineral club where members can share their experiences and trials of mineral collecting and ID with you. One last suggestion; if you're interested in more of the science behind the rocks and how they form, many community colleges offer courses in earth science that might interest you.
As far as websites go, you've picked the best one on the internet in Mindat!!!
