Hallo,

Some weeks ago I posted this picture: ( http://www.mindat.org/photo-470881.html )


and some days later I received a message questioning the photo because "has too much background":

I think is good like this because you can see that the magnet is in air over the table and I explained this to Mindat supervisor but I did not received answer and the photo is still questioned.

Please, can somebody help me to unblock this photo?

Ive viewed your experiments on the spanish forum Jose very interesting, but there was no explanation as to why you decided to start trying to attach magnets to minerals?

Heath, I think you were the one who started it with your magnetic basalts. For attaching magnets I think Krazy Glue works well as if properly applied it would be invisible in a photo.:)-D

Jose, I see your pics state that Almandine-Spessartine is not a recorded species for the Shigar Valley. For what it's worth, I bought a piece of the same species from a Pakistan dealer last year. It's stated that my piece is from the Braldu Valley. This is the next valley to the East of the Shigar, the two valleys joining at their mouths. The matrix on my piece looks like Albite.


Each of the valleys is over ten miles or more long but my specimen is claimed to be from Teston. I can't identify that off the satellite imagery as there are many small settlements up the valley. I also have another Almandine-Spessartine from this area north of Skardu if I can find the card.

Rob me and roger are visiting other areas with outcrops of both cleveland dyke ( BASALTIC ANDESITE) and outcrops of the GREAT WHIN SILL) if allowed we will post reports off our findings, and i prommis no glue will be involved!!! BUT LOTS OF DIFFERENT MAGNETS WILL BE !

Bob, no glues, no tricks in my pictures, you are invited to a personal demonstration when you come to Spain. Or, easier, you can try with your own garnets. Some of them, with enough magnetism, will lift the magnet. To check light magnetism, put a short cylindrical neodimium magnet (like that one in picture) on a flat table (better on glass). It will turn fast until his axis is oriented N - S (in fact is a compass). Then put the sample close to magnet and try to drag the magnet laterally, rolling to one side and to another side. In this way you will find magnetism in almost any mineral with Fe in his composition (except pyrite).


Owen, Braldu river is a tributary of the Shigar. Is possible my garnet is from any outcrop in Braldu but as I can't be sure, I prefere to stay with the location gaved for my dealer. On the other hand, it is not logical that Mindat accepts spessartine in Shigar Valley but not Almandine-Spessartine series. Would bet a dollar that most "pure" Spessartines from Shigar in Mindat gallery are actually Almandine-Spessartine series!

I spent 4 weeks in Gilgit - Skardu area and even trading minerals at place was very unsafe the real origin. Can imagine how reliable is the locality obtained buying in internet from dealers in Peshawar.


Heat, I think the news will be when we find a basalt that is NOT magnetic!


Even this very porous basalt from Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain, is enough magnetic to lift this 6 x 3 mm small magnet.

Josele, I was being sarcastic when I suggested glue to hold the magnet in place:-D The magnetic properties one sees with these magnets are really amazing to anyone who grew up with Alnico magnets. Thank you for your kind invitation which someday I would love to fulfill. If you are ever near Vancouver please visit me!!! (Bring magnets!!!;-))

Rob ive tried stick my none rare earth magnets as they seem to be called now to many minerals yet the only pieces ive managed to do it are whinstone and an unidentified granite and carbon material.

Hi Jose, Heath et al,

I've been wondering about using a modern android phone to enable measurement of magnetic fields and magnetic field distortion due to large scale mineralisation (i.e. the Cleveland Dyke), and to measurement of individual crystals, this time using a nearby magnet instead of the Earth's field. I don't have a posh phone - but smartphones have an incredibly sensitive magnetic sensor in them, and I wonder if anyone could do a quick experiment. The free apps for datalogging magnetic field intensity are on google play, dunno how good they will be. Simply putting a magnet within a foot of the phone and passing a specimen between could show a result. Observing the Earth's magnetic field on the phone, whilst walking diagonally across land overlying a dyke could also be interesting. Just a couple of thoughts.....

Well worth a try Rog by the way i think i managed to work out the deflection to a compass needle caused by the burried Cleveland dyke at Stainton quarry it shows a deflection of between 40 and 80 degrees, also i then tested left over dyke stone from quarry works in the same location i found very little deflection.


I am waiting for a reply from Elijah but as ive stated before ime sure this is becouse the compass needle has already been deflected on aproach to the dyke.

This is suppose to be an andesite from the Unitah Mountains of Utah. The magnet is a 15pound REE magnet.

Any chance of that magnet sticking a bit further up and turn it over a bit ie lets see it old its own wieght my friend?
