GeneralPassing of Donald Volkman

21st May 2016 23:22 UTCKarl Volkman Expert

Its been a while since I have been on, but I wanted to let the Mindat community know of the passing of my father Donald Volkman.

Dad was an avid rockhound all his life and for many years a well known collector in the Pacific Northwest, Washington State Mineral community. He focused much of his interest in odd localities, metallic element specimens, Butte Montana minerals, and Agates. With many of his microminerals photographed and posted in our Mindat gallery. ( http://www.mindat.org/gallery-653.html )

Dad spent almost every day reading the forum threads and looking at the new mineral uploads.

He was 73 when he passed on Monday.

My sincerest condolences to you and your family, and I wish you a lot of strength in such difficult times.

73 is way too young to leave this planet.

While I never knew your Dad, I know how fun it was rockhounding in Central and Eastern Washington as my wife and I lived in Spokane for several years in the 1970s. My sincere condolences to you and your family! CHEERS......BOB HARMAN

My condolences to you and your family for the passing of your father. He lived nearby and we spent many hours dicussing minerals at the annual Seattle Mineral Marketplace and the Kelso FM Symposium. He will be sorely missed by the Pacific Northwest mineral collecting community. John S.

Don was a fountain of knowledge about localities and finds which he loved to share. He will be sorely missed. Thank you so much Karl for letting us know and my deepest condolences to you.

I was saddened to learn of Donald's passing at the very recent Seattle Mineral Market. I looked forward to talking with him about NW localities and minerals. I talked with him for quite a bit at the SMM last year and he lit up when he showed me a cosalite piece from British Columbia that he snagged at the show. I remarked that I had seen it but passed as I had a couple already. He turned the piece over to reveal the native gold that I had missed! That may have been the one time that I actually picked up a specimen without turning it over! He loved that fact!

Nice to see one of Don's photos as "Photo of the Day" today, and a very fine agate it is indeed.

It is sad to hear, Karl... Please accept my condolences. I wish you and your family get better.
