GeneralGarnet on eBay....from Madagascar?

I needed some cheap garnet, so I bought some on eBay from a chinese seller.

When I asked the seller from what locality, the answer was Madagascar.

Can anybody confirm this?

Mindat shows them from there>>> http://www.mindat.org/gallery.php?loc=2247&min=10272

The word "cheap" has me confused. Usually garnets from Madagascar are more costly than others and are usually sold in matrix. Looking at the photo they look like typical garnets from China that are usually readily available..

stephanie

edit - location of Chinese garnets is usually:

I bought garnets in person in China recently and the seller said they were from Mozambique. Other sellers had garnets from Mali, and India. The Chinese import truly staggering quantities of rocks from all over the world nowadays so, unless a material has some mineralogically distinctive characteristic, if it came via China it could be originally from anywhere. Discussion will be inconclusive unless you see some really distinctive property, which I don't see in this case; the crystals look like typical generic garnets.

I agree with Stephanie. I have similar specimens and they are from Koktokay No. 3 pegmatite (Altay Mine).

Dear Fennefoss;

HOPE that's your name; you left nothing else. Anywho, if you look at the "tourmaline cluster" at the bottom, you'll see it's an epidote spray. You buy from MOST Chinese dealers, you are playing Russian Roulette. You MAY get a prize, but, usually, you get the bullet. ALL information they give, is questionable.

including Koktokay no. 3, I would say, or does anyone have hard evidence that the imaged garnets actually are from there?

cheers
Hi Steve and others...

I think it is safe to say that the chance these came from Madagascar is much smaller than them coming from China.

Actually, for my project it doesn't really matter. They are only to serve as an example of garnet, nothing else. I hope I get them in time for the big fair in the village. I intend to have some activity for children based upon the fact that in norwegian the name of the mineral is the same as grenade.

Garnet=granat and granat=grenade.

It is like bow and arrow shooting, only this time with hand grenades (håndgranat).

All the participants will receive some gift with a small piece of garnet, and I want to use some of the crystals as price for the winners.

Thanks for the help!
