Come on guys, let's keep the forum active!
What about the following idea? I was thinking to start a mineral chain box. I have put together 8 micros. (european style! matrix is maximum 4-5 cm, but the chrystals are all micro). Nothing fancy. Nothing expensive. Some self collected. If seven of you are willing to join in, I thought I would send the package to the first one who responds here. He can either send them on to the next in line, or replace some or all of them by specimens of his own. And so on, till number 8 sends the box back to me. (Well, seeing what the mailboys do to boxes, it might be needed to change the box somewhere along the line! grinning smiley ) I am curious to see what I would get back and what route the box would follow around the globe! You can only lose postage money to the next guy...
What do you say? Anyone like the idea?

Here I go:

This sounds like a really cool idea - I'd participate if I had more micros. Also might be fun to have people leave old postage on or put it in the box as a memento of the route. It would be neat to see results after you get the box back!

Eddy, I think that this is a great idea. It could be taken even further.

I belong to a group of worldwide watercolour artists. Every three months, names get drawn out of a hat. The name that you get is the recipient of a painting that you then do. Someone else gets your name, paints a watercolour painting themselves and sends it to you (and you don't know who has your name until you receive it). A great way to acquire a collection of original artwork.

This method could be applied to micro collectors too. All it needs is someone to draw out the names, and let the individuals know who they are to send micros to. Every three months, recipients get (eg) 8 new micros. It doesn't matter how many people join in.

What does everyone think.

Steve

Wow. Thank you all for your great response, guys!
I will initiate Box nr 1 this weekend! I will send everyone a PM to get your addresses.
I will include a 'flightplan' in the box.
Thanks for starting box nr 2, Jason! We will see if that gets filled as well. I will contact you
then.
Steve, I sure also like your idea with 'the hat', and will consider doing that if response would be
overwhelming here. I think "my system" has the advantage that you can "pass" on a box,
in your system you have to accept whatever you get... anyway, I hope everyone gets something
out of it. We will see how it turns out!
Looking forward to seeing you in Ste Marie, Steffen! Will pack Belgian beer drinking smiley

Eddy,

I'm fairly new to micromounting, but I'd be glad to join in as well. I think it would be a great idea to get a box of micros and keep passing it on! Put me on the list for the next box that goes around!

If you mind giving your email, we will just keep using mindat PM of course.

If you don't want what you get, you can pass it on next time. If I get specimens in a trade that don't "fit" in my collection, I usually pass them on to other local collectors anyway. "What goes around, comes around"!

I think that it would be good to have an "International Super Swap" in addition to "Around the world in 8 micros". I think that the two can be complementary. I'll put some feelers out to other like-minded groups and individuals.

I'd suggest the rules be along the lines of:
  • 8 micros in a swap
  • A swap every 3 months
  • Names drawn from two hats, first one drawn out of Hat A sends to first one drawn out of Hat B, 2nd to 2nd, etc.
  • A redraw option if recipient for a sender is the same as the previous swap, or if name out of each hat is the same person
  • Only the sender (and the swap manager) know who is the recipient of which package
  • If there is an odd-number of swappers, the last name drawn sends to the first recipient (who effectively receives 2 packages)
  • Swappers can leave or join any swap
  • Swappers must confirm that they are IN any new swap before names are drawn
  • Each sender bears the cost of postage and packing

I've set up a special email address for anyone interested - microswap AT crocoite DOT com

Steve

Hi all

Greeting from Sydney, Australia

I'd love to join in the "around the world in 8 micros". What fun. I'm not sure if I would be 4 or 5 in Jason's group

Thanks for the initiative
