Hi Ot, I was just looking on ebay and came across some mineral tack that is non greasy. I have not used it before but am wanting to purchase some also. heres the web site- www.ebay.com/.../Mineral-Tack-Specimen-Mounting-Putty..

You might want to get a better opinion though.

Cheers!

I have had good experience with using a tack that is sold as "Tetningslist " for bathrooms at Clas Ohlson,in Norway their product nr. 34-4264 , see http://www.clasohlson.no/Siteseeker/Search_o.aspx?q=Tetningslist.

I'm afraid that tack with NO oil/grease doesn't exist...

I've definitively switched to hot glue: no grease, better looking, cheap and easy to buy in each hardware store / big store.

Agree with Luca, every mineral tack, whether specialist for minerals or not, contains some oils. There are some that contain less oils, but they are the ones that are more likely to dry out and crack after a few months/years.

Regardless, if you use tack to secure important specimens, check and if necessary replace it every year or so.

Hot glue is much maligned, mostly due to ignorance of how to remove it (it's much easier to remove hot glue from most specimens than stubborn dried up mineral tack remenants.

Seeing this discussion has led me to ask two questions. First, how does one remove hot glue from delicate minerals which have been mounted on a base of whatever? Second, how does one remove the oil from "mineral tack" that has wicked up into porous specimens? I am still struggling to remove these unsightly stains from a collections of micromounts I purchased. So far I have tried soaking in isopropanol and acetone with minimal results.

Usually you can easily remove hot glue wetting in with some drops of alcool (better white aka not coloured alcool of course!).

For oil or tack residual from delicate specimens I think you need some kind of solvent but, sorry, I can't help you in a better way.

This stuff has no oil or residue but t will stick to the specimen and sometimes leaves some of the wax in the cracks and vugs where it was mounted. I never tried to remove any of it with heat or chemicals since I mount my specimens for keeps. Heres a link:Museum Wax

I have tried the wax used by printers to do "paste-ups". It works well with any size specimen, but I think it is a little sensitive to temperature, If it gets cold the specimen may separate. Otherwise, it does not dry out or discolor. One can soften it by kneading and it is easy to use. For mounting micros, I usually use Sorbo white glue that is used by librarians. It is a little more viscous than the usual white glue, doesn't discolor, dries fairly quickly, and is reliably permanent.

I have been using blue "poster putty" made by Duck. It is the best I have found. Does not leave grease spots and does not dry out like the off-white brands. I have not seen it at Staples, but Office Max has it near their poster boards.

To remove mineral tack residue or oil from mineral tack from a specimen you can use white spirit og diesel.

Is it true that the preferred mineral mounting tack/putty is actually a product called Terostat (a type of adhesive cement)? If so, which Terostat product is it, and how are people sourcing it? Is "Geo-Tack" and "Min-tack" just a name it's given after being repurposed?

I just bought some from shannons haven't tried it out yet. It didn't say VII on it but it appears to be the same one and was confirmed by others. Next part is just speculation but I saw when I searched for it pictures of what looked like a calking use for a dryer to the wall. Guessing if good enough for high vibration of dryer and heat and intended long term use it might really be good stuff. I haven't had a chance to get it but check out elmer's tack. Some packages say never dries out. Might be a stretch but apparently it is ment for long term use but might need to work it a bit to get it ready to use.

@OT

Sorry for ignorance. White spirit og diesel? Do you have a link? Where to get it? Every time I search for it it brings up something different.

29th Apr 2017 05:15 UTCCasey Montgomery

Have a question on elmers glue. There is any difference in the elmers white glue and the elmers clear glue? Standard stuff. I bought the clear glue for mounting a ways back. Does anyone know of any real difference? Especially in terms of mounting? I may end up going Donalds route with the Sorbos white glue. It just makes too much sense. If librarians use it for preservation sounds like it may be a good idea, that is essentially what we are hoping for.

Casey,

I think OT meant "White spirit or Diesel". An easy typing error!

Cheers

White spirits https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_spirit

aka Paint thinner - hardware store

diesel - most gasoline stations.

Casey and others,

There is a typo in my post. The white glue I use is "Sobo: Premium Craft & Fabric Glue".

Good deal sorry makes sense. Thank you all. Oh btw trying out the shannons min tack using it to tack the internal label to the back of the box. So far it is every tacky almost can't get it off fingers. First impressions good stuff.

30th Apr 2017 06:27 UTCCasey Montgomery

*very tacky* darn auto correct lol

The mineral tack sold by Kranz is oil-free, as far as I know. I've been using it for at least 15 years now and never had a problem with it, anyhow. They attend a number of the big shows - Ste Marie and Munich for example - and will ship it to you if necessary if you order from their web catalog - this is at www.krantz-online.de

Casey wrote: "it is very tacky almost can't get it off fingers." I would consider this a possible problem. If it is that sticky, can you get it off the specimen? There has been some discussion on Mindat about different techniques for doing this, but one of the issues seems to be that it sometimes is very difficult to remove all the tack. I have run into this problem with a yellow tack that came on some mounts from Europe.
