Mineral ShowsIndiana shows?

16th Feb 2012 14:21 UTCAnonymous User

Hi: I would like to know if there are any gem, mineral, fossil, tool shows scheduled in Indiana in 2012? If so, how many vendors etc., are there usually there? Thank you. Bill

BILL there are a number of Indiana shows scheduled for 2012. March 2 - 4 is the Richmond Indiana show which is a small but ok show with several mineral and fossil dealers and the usual jewelry stuff. May 5 - 6 is the Cincinnati Ohio show (close to SE Indiana) . This is a big regional show with a number of moderate to near hi end dealers and always has good exhibits as well. June 21 - 24 is the Bloomington, show at the Monroe Co fairgrounds. This is a big show with moderate numbers of dealers of all types. There is a South Bend show in August (???) Then in September there is the Greenfield show near Indianapolis at the Hancock Co fairgrounds. I think the dates are Sept 7 - 9 or the following weekend. There is the Falls of the Ohio Show at the state park, along the Ohio River, in late September. The Indiana State Museum has a good show right in the museum the third weekend (?) in October. There is the Fort Wayne show and Evansville show also in September or October.

So, you see there are numerous Indiana shows and several in nearby states Hope you can attend some BOB HARMAN President, Midwest Chapter Friends of Mineralogy

The Bloomington show is big, you will need two days to see it all at an unhurried pace, at least that is what I found out last year. I got to 5 shows last year, which was great fun, but you sure have to budget yourself, and you don't know what will be staring back at you at the next table, so where to outgo your income can get suspenseful! It is funny, I find when i limit my spending, I'm the most satisfied w/ my purchases.

While you're out gallivanting, check out the Funk mineral museum & house, just s. of Bloomington, Il. What a collection, and it is free. By appointment, too, since you are guided, not left in there alone! Enjoy.

The Show in South Bend (Michiana Gem & MIneral Society) is the weekend before Labor Day. There are about 20 dealers, displays, and demonstrators. It's at the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds, in an air-conditioned building. Watch www.sauktown.com/Michiana for more details.

BILL and D MIKE REINKE The BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA (!!!!) show is in a different state then the Funk House and mineral museum which is several hundred miles away near BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS (!!!) And, yes, check Rock and Gem or Rocks and Minerals magazines periodically for upcoming shows. Also just google the city and rock show and usually a website with show dates will come up. BOB HARMAN

I have been to the Lawrence County Rock Club show two years runnning. Both times I found nice mineral specimens to purchase, including my second most viewed specimen (nickeline and more, mindat photo 346674, with 436 viewings and counting in less than a year and a half), and nice display pieces of azurite, stibnite, and others. Note: this is the show held at the Monroe County Fairgrounds on the west side of Bloomington, Indiana. I have an article here on mindat for last year’s show, including lots of photos (http://www.mindat.org/article.php/1233/+Lawrence+County+Rock+Club+%28Indiana%29+show+and+swap). This is a show I wouldn’t miss. No matter what your interest, you’ll find it there.

I have also attended the Greater Indianapolis Gem and Mineral Show (Hancock County Fairgrounds), although I missed last year’s due to being in California that weekend. I bought several good specimens the previous year, including a remarkable specimen of fluorite consisting entirely of trisoctahedrons. There’s nothing else like it on mindat out of over 12,500 fluorite photos! This was the largest regional show I’ve been to, and I’ll be there every year I can. It also has a bit of everything.

The Evansville Lapidary Society gem, mineral, and fossil show is set up in the corridors of a mall. They have a lot of lapidary material and gems, but few highy-quality mineral specimens. Last year (late October) there were more dealers than ever before (I've been there at least ten times, but I live here), but none who specialized in mineral specimens. A few had entry-level material or special items such as meteorites. A few had fossils also. However, several years ago I acquired the magnetite specimen there whose photo I uploaded to mindat.

I also attended the Cincinnati show last year. I was there on the same day as the Kentucky Derby, and since I have to drive through Louisville to get there, I was in a hurry to make the return drive before the big crowd hit town in the afternoon. Most dealers were high-end or approaching that, so there wasn’t much that interested me that fit my budget. However, I bought a few very nice pieces, among them cabinet-sized spinel-twinned sphalerite and skeletal galena from Bulgaria that were marked at half the regular price (but still over $100 each), and a dirty miniature of really good cuprite octahedrons from the Rubtsovskoe deposit in Russia that I knew would clean up nicely. The cuprite did, and those are all posted on mindat now. I wrote a completely non-judgmental and enthusiastic piece on that show also, and posted quite a few photos, as I had promised my photographic subjects. But someone associated with the show saw my write-up (article) on mindat and uploaded quite a long letter as a complaint about my story (which was me writing about MY experiences there, right?) and explaining how much I missed and therefore neglected reporting. That over-the-top reaction to my innocent little article was so obnoxious that I deleted the whole thing. But, there was a lot to see, even if I couldn’t afford much.

Bob Harman, D. Mike Reinke, Jim Daly, Norman King: Thanks to all of you for your input. This information will be put to good use this year as my wife and I will then have a lot of different options. Bill

Bob,

Thanks for your concern, please note the Il is not a "two" after "Bloomington". There apparently are several of them. (Did they ever figure out which 'Springfield' the Simpsons live in?!) And getting there would require some "gallivanting" from Indiana, but well worth it.

Norman,

It takes a thick skin to deal w/ some posters, please endure, as I enjoy what you don't delete! The dinosaur cheeks explaination was fascinating, and the chert/chalcedony piece was very good. i read somewhere that 'all teaching amounts to discerning the differences between things', and that, you do well.

YEP! YEP! YEP! I did see the "IL" in your post D Mike R, but as the 2 venues are not close together, I just decided to clarify the gallivanting distance for Bill B. Good write up on the Indiana shows NORM. I should also mention the Louisville, Ky show in November as this show is pretty good and just across the Ohio River from Indiana.

Hope to see you all at some of these shows. BOB HARMAN President, Midwest Chapter Friends of Mineralogy
