I cannot get there until Sunday, and then with a quick turn around. So if you witness a 6'5" guy with a cane hustling through the aisles it might well be me.

I will make it this year, always a good time. It will be interesting to see Fred's pictures with the mineral specimens.

16th Apr 2013 14:28 UTCGary Moldovany

Does anyone have a list of events and guest speakers for this year's show in August? Thanks!

16th Apr 2013 15:54 UTCLuiz Alberto Dias Menezes, Fo.

I will be there, on the wholesale section, booth W-57.

16th Apr 2013 16:28 UTCJeremy A. Zolan

I will be there visiting and will likely have some selected new finds of New England material for trade.

On August 9 -11, comes the East Coast Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show. The featured exhibitor is Carolyn Manchester, with fifty cases of rarely seen beauty. The hours are 10 to 6 on Fri. and Sat. and 10 to 5 on Sun. Bob Jones, Nancy Millard-Swing, Jeff Scovil and Kevin Downey are featured speakers. Free mineral specimens for the youngun's, a museum store and mineral ID booth, so bring down your un-knowns. 200 local and international dealers. Great show, I've been attending since it was held in the Springfield Coliseum years ago, now, of course, at the Eastern States Exposition Grounds. AC, lots of parking and minerals, minerals and minerals. See y'all there.

One thing I'd like to mention is the monumental effort it takes to bring your collection to exhibit at a major show. Granted, dealers move tons and tons of material from show to show, week in and week out, these folks are pro, and for the most part make it look easy. But when the private collector, who has built an impressive group of their particular interest, that rests in the privacy of their home is asked to send them on the road, they are faced with a huge challenge. And to those that take on this challenge, and their helpers, I say thank you very much for sharing. Think of taking your collection, deciding what to bring, how to show it, how to pack it so it survives, then packing it, insuring it, trucking it, receiving it, un-packing, setting it up to plan. Now you're a third of the way there. Break it down, pack it - you know the rest. Makes me exhausted just thinking about it. And they do it to share with us the beauty and wonder they see! Awesome! Up the altruistic collector! Thank you.

And there talks on the cases Spanning the World Talk - East Coast Show - 2009

Oops. Best laid plans of Mice and Mineralogists, etc. Have to be in the Big Apple and can't get away to the show. So close...

3rd Aug 2013 19:00 UTCbarbara maloney

Just curious. This is my first visit as both collector and possible dealer. Is it tacky to try to barter if you have some nice items, or is this accepted?

Thanks!

3rd Aug 2013 21:31 UTCBob Harman

Oh Dear! This year's Springfield show conflicts with the new dates of Aug 9 - Aug 11 for the Bloomington, Indiana show now held at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds near Bedford Indiana. Just too much going on! And this will be my first year in the last several that I will miss the Springfield show, but I do plan to be in Denver in September.

BARBARA , The bottom line answer to your question is: YES, Most dealers do deal or barter. Here are some examples.

Some dealers have what they call "KEYSTONE" A shelf or table labeled as such; these specimens are all 50% off their listed prices or "keystone". Usually the specimens are slightly dinged and/or have been in stock awhile.

Some dealers put stars ( *) attached to the specimen labels. Each star is 10% off the listed price so *** would mean 30% off the price listed on the specimen label. And the pricing guide is displayed adjacent to the specimen shelf or table so customers know exactly what to expect.

As to direct dealing, most dealers do it and each dealer has personal variations and a threshold of how to do it. For example, long time regular customers or people known to the dealer or specimens that have been in inventory awhile or really wanting to make a sale on an expensive item etc etc etc. Many dealing variations and examples could be given, but the bottom line is that dealing does occur quite regularly with most dealers. So Barbara, I would expect some customers to ask you for deals and it is up to you to price your items in a manner that deals can be made to the satisfaction of both you as the seller and your customers. Hope this helps. Have a good show and CHEERS.........BOB

BARBARA , I forgot to add, and it probably does go without saying, that it works both ways. You as the customer should ask if a dealer can do a bit better on any item that you might want as your customers might ask you as the dealer to do the same for them. Remember that there might be more dealing wiggle room on $500 dollar items than on $30 dollar items. CHEERS...........BOB

Barbara,

The message board has a swap forum where you can offer specimens to trade with others. This is not a place however to offer things for sale. There are a lot of things here on mindat and it will take you a while to learn what they are. I don't even know what they all are. But welcome and feel free to come back with questions. Mindat has a manual that will tell you how to do things on mindat.

We're looking forward to seeing everyone at the show. I plan on bringing a few flats of NJ traprock minerals for trade, if anyone is interested. We are also hoping to get some good deals in the wholesale area now that we are officially a licensed business. Gary & Heather - Just Keep A Rockin'

I was always impressed at the Sprinfield Show with the quality of the exhibition and who was dedicated each year to a different collector. But it seems that there is not longer such a exhibition?

Best regards,

Mario Pauwels

6th Aug 2013 11:50 UTCvictor rzonca

As reported earlier in this post, the exhibitor is Carolyn Manchester. And yes the show continues its program of bringing some of the finest collections for your edification and enjoyment. And as Wayne mentioned, there will be fifty cases. Always a fine presentation.

6th Aug 2013 12:10 UTCMario Pauwels

Thank you Victor for your info.

Normaly the guest exhibitor for the East Coast Show is always mentioned on Marty's website, but not this year. Anyway Carolyn Manchester is the ferfect choice for this exhibition. She is not only always very friendly and very helpfull, but Carolyn also has a superfine taste for the real aesthetic specimens!

Best regards,

Mario Pauwels

Your right, the guest exhibitor for the East Coast Show is always mentioned on Marty's website, but not this year, rather odd.

It only shows in Marty's show poster >> SHOW POSTER

from his main website Marty Zinn Expositions

Victor

There are usually 53 cases, 1 main case and 52 regular cases.
