Improving Mindat.orgQeqertarsuaq Island (Disko Island)

Qeqertarsuaq Island (Disko Island)

The 22 valid minerals in the Mineral List is not complete. From Lyngmarksfjeld, Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn) has Nelly Jensen Copenhagen also collected apophyllite, prehnite, analcime (also black analcime), thomsonite, natrolite, mesolite and gyrolite.

From the collection in the Mineralogical Museum, Copenhagen, we se chabazite from Igpik, mordenite from Skansen, okenite from Skarvefjord and in the latest book about the Geology of Greenland we se metallic Iron from Killiit Fortunebjerg and Uiffaq.

Hans,

Mindat is what we in Norwegian call a "dugnad" - which could be translated to something like "voluntary teamwork". I hope you and many others will contribute - not just by pointing at lacking information - but by entering this information yourself into the database with the necessary references.

Knut

Knut

Sorry if I have criticised the splendid teamwork for Mindat. The intention was to mention Godhavn as an example with Minerals not found in the literature, ex. few Minerals mentioned by Bøggild. Nelly Jensen inform me today, that apophyllite, prehnite og analcime are from the coast by Røde Elv and in Blæsedalen. From Lyngmarksfjeld there is also Levyne.

Hi Hans,

thanks for the info: as a ref. you can add "Nelly Jensen collection" and "Collection of the Mineralogical Museum, Copenhagen".

Hi Uwe

Thanks, but I did not succeed by trying. I already have an E-mail and Mindat want another. Sorry, I am an amateur both to minerals and computers.

Hans, no worries - I have added the missing localities and the minerals in the two collections.

What is the full citation (authors, year etc.) of the "Geology of Greenland" book? I need it for adding the iron.

Hi Uwe

Thank You for patience and kindly help.

The most important book is: O.B. Bøggild: The Mineralogy of Greenland. Meddelelser om Grønland, Bd. 149. Nr. 3. 445 pages. 1953.

In this book there are many local names from Qeqertarsuaq district:

Scolecite and often with stilbite or chabazite: Skarvefjeld, Akiarut, Lyngmarksfjeld, Godhavn, Tunusua, Røde Elv, Blaafjeld, Anguiartoutit, Qarusuit, Qarssuanguit, Qaqat and Eqalunguakat.

Levynite often with chabazite: Puilasoq, Lyngmarken, Akiarut, Kuvnerssuaq, Unatorssuaq, Blaafjeld, Qarasuit, Iginiarfik and Ivisarqut.

Tarajungitsoq and Qarusuit is very close to one another.

The geological books about Greenland is not good in respect to minerals, so Bøggild is the general key to the minerals of Greenland and localities.

Thanks, Hans, I mistakenly thought in your sentence "... in the latest book about the Geology of Greenland we se metallic Iron from Killiit Fortunebjerg and Uiffaq." you were refering to a newly published book about the geology.

Niels Henriksen: Grønlands Geologiske Udvikling - fra urtid til nutid. GEUS. 2005. 270 pages and in english: Geological history of Greenland.

- and GEUS have a long list of publications og news from Greenland.

All the "Bøgghild localities" on Qeqertarsuaq Island mentioned above now added to the database.
