Improving Mindat.orgCap Garonne BIG update

j’ai commencé un travail de mise à jour de la mine de Cap Garonne, car j’estime que c’est une localité qui vaut vraiment la peine que l’information associée soit de la meilleure qualité possible. Le travail déjà effectué comporte :

- une courte introduction sur la mine

- une bibliographie totalement revue et structurée pour permettre d’identifier les principaux documents relatifs à la mine. Elle ne se veut pas exhaustive. L’AAMCG (Association des Amis de la mine de Cap Garonne) entretient une bibliographie plus complète.

- une mise à jour de la liste des espèces (ajouts, suppressions, mises en « à préciser »), sur la base des travaux que nous menons entre l’AAMCG et l’AFM.

- une structuration avec les trois sous-localités de la mine : mine nord, mine sud et travaux de la Gavaresse. Pour le moment, il ne me semble pas urgent de ventiler toutes les photos sous les 3 sous-sites, mais le cadre existe maintenant pour ceux qui voudraient préciser l’origine de leurs prochaines photos.

L’étape suivante, importante, consiste à vérifier les photos une par une, et il y en a 635 !

Même si pour beaucoup, il n’y aura rien à dire, le fait est que si on passe par le mécanisme de « complaint », ça risque d’être lourd et pas forcément sympa.

Je vous propose donc d’éditer les photos pour lesquelles il ne me semble pas y avoir de doute, et on passera par des échanges de mails pour les cas les plus compliqués (ex : quand la façon dont la photo est prise ne permet pas de conclure sans ambigüité). Par exemple :

n’est à coup sûr pas un minéral de Cap Garonne, mais une hématite alsacienne, ou même de Menzenschwand.

Cela risque de prendre un certain temps, et je suggère de poster un message sur ce sujet de discussion quand j ‘aurai fini. A ce moment, je vous inviterai à regarder les photos qui vous appartiennent (depuis votre page personnelle, c’est facile), et à me dire si les modifications vous conviennent. Si ce n’est pas le cas, on reviendra à l’ancienne formulation. Je pense que nous avons tous à gagner à ce travail, et j’espère que vous m’accorderez votre soutien. Je souhaiterais démarrer début septembre si possible, et vos commentaires sont les bienvenus.

I have started an update of the Cap Garonne mine, as I think that this locality really deserves the best possible information. The following has already been done:

- addition of a short introduction to the mine.

- addition of a totally reworked and structured reference list, to identify more easily the major documents dealing with the mine. It is not meant to be complete: the AAMCG (Association des Amis de la mine de Cap Garonne) keeps a more complete reference list.

- update of the species list (additions, removals, change to “questionable”), on the basis of the works being carried out by AAMCG and AFM.

- structuration of the locality, with three sub-localities added : the north mine, the south mine and the workings at La Gavaresse. For the time being, it does not seem urgent to dispatch all pictures under those three sub-localities, but a framework is now in place for those wanting to provide a more accurate origin to their next pictures.

The next step, an important one, consists in checking all mineral pictures, one by one, and there are 635 of them!

Although most will not require corrections, if we use the standard “complaint” mechanism, it can be tedious and possibly unpleasant. I suggest editing all the pictures that can safely be modified, and we will exchange mails for the most difficult cases (e.g. when the way the picture is taken does not allow concluding safely).

is certainly not a Cap Garonne mineral, but a hematite specimen from Alsace of Menzenschwand.

Updating all these pictures may take a while, and I suggest posting a message on this thread once I am done. Then, you will be most welcome to look at all your own pictures (from your personal page, it is easy), and tell me if the modifications are agreeable to you. .If not, we will revert to the previous text. My opinion is that all of us can benefit from this work, and I hope that you will support me. If possible, I would like to start beginning of September, and any comment or suggestion is welcome.

Bonjour Georges ,

Je pense aussi qu'un "nettoyage" s'avère necessaire pour la galerie Cap Garonne,car avec le temps la quantité d'erreurs va en croissant.

"CG" est l'une des meilleures vitrines de la minéralogie Française et à ce titre elle doit être au plus près de la vérité.

Suis partant pour y accomplir ma part de travail.

Hi,

I went through the whole gallery of almost 640 pictures. The work done includes:

- 19 change of name of principal mineral. Many associated species changed, too.

- 26 complaints, all closed.

- 2 specimens moved to Salsigne, where they belonged.

- many corrections of descriptions, such as translation problems from French to English, typos, etc.

I want to thank all those I contacted for their co-operation, and in particular Jean-Marie Claude and Pascal Chollet.

The locality was structured into three sub-localities: North Mine, South Mine and La Gavaresse, with locality pictures added when necessary.

(NB: an additional 4th can be added: "Cap Garonne processing plant" when slag minerals from the old processing plant are studied).

Minerals of La Gavaresse were moved to this locality, and all corresponding mineral entries were added. I did not try to do it for the North and South mine, since the exact origin is not known in many cases.

The global list of species of Cap Garonne was updated to fit to the work made by AAMCG and AFM in 2009. I may want to consider that I have finished (for now) concerning this very interesting locality.

I still do not know yet which will be the next locality, but I have some ideas...:)

Ca y est, j'ai fini l'examen de près de 640 photos. Les opérations réalisées comprennent:

- 19 changements de nom du minéral principal, et beaucoup concernant les minéraux associés.

- 26 remarques, toutes traitées et closes.

- 2 spécimens déplacés vers Salsigne.

- beaucoup de corrections dans les descriptions, comme les problèmes de traduction français vers anglais, fautes de frappe, etc.

Je remercie chaleureusement pour leur coopération tous ceux que j'ai pu contacter à l'occasion de ce travail et plus spécialement Jean-Marie Claude et Pascal Chollet.

La localité a été structurée en trois sous-localités: la mine nord, la mine sud et les travaux de la Gavaresse. Des photos de ces sites ont été ajoutées quand c'était nécessaire. (NB: une quatrième sous-localité pourrait être ajoutée: l'usine, quand les scories seront étudiées)

Les photos d'échantillons de la Gavaresse ont été déplacées vers cette localité, et les minéraux qu'on y trouve ont été ajoutés à la liste. Je ne chercherai pas à dispatcher les photos entre Nord et Sud car pour beaucoup de pièces, cette info n'est pas connue.

La liste globale des espèces de Cap Garonne a été mise à jour pour la mettre à niveau de l'étude AAMCG/AFM de 2009. Je vais peut-être considérer que j'ai fini (pour le moment) les modifications de cette localité passionnante.

Je ne sais pas quelle sera la suivante, mais j'ai ma petite idée...
