Improving Mindat.orgKaser Quarry millerite, photo problems

14th Jul 2014 13:36 UTCTony Peterson Expert

I'm in the middle of doing some detailed work on a millerite specimen and I noticed that some of Lavinsky's closeup photos don't have a proper scale (e.g., http://www.mindat.org/photo-179876.html). Also, that photo appears to be of a typical banded chalcedony matrix, rather than limestone.

They talk of a 4 cm vugh and give over all dimensions. Is there no chalcedony there? Perhaps the chalcedony was added to the list with this piece as reference?

Hey, if it's good enough for you, who am I to question?

The dimensions seem OK, looking at both photos. But your comment about chalcedony and not limestone is concerning. Do you doubt the locality of this piece? Where else might it have been found? If there's uncertainty about the locality we ought to remove it.

I am familiar with material from that neighborhood. Everybody is right: the millerite-containing vugs can be lined with chalcedony as Tony observes, but I think the overall matrix in the pictured specimen is limestone as described.

Thanks.
