Improving Mindat.orgKawai mine confusion?

23rd Oct 2014 14:21 UTCDavid Parfitt

The Kawai mine near Ena, Japan is a locality for ferro-gedrite (see Bull .Natn. Sci .Mus., Ser. C, 6(4), 107-113), but it is listed on mindat as a sublocality of the Kasuga mine, Ibigawa-cho, which is 50km or more to the west of Ena from what I can tell. I think it has been confused with the "Kawai pit", a sub-locality of the Kasuga mine mentioned in the type description of aspidolite (Mineral. Mag., 69(6), 1047-1057). Perhaps someone could check this?

Yes, good catch, David. Peter Cristofono had entered the Ena city Kawai mine correctly a long time ago (11 years ago), but last year someone else moved it to Kasuga. The species lists for the 2 "Kawai" localities need to be untangled again.

Thanks for confirming this, Alfredo. I think the following four photos belong to the Ena city Kawai mine rather than the Kasuga one:

The ferro-gedrite paper lists annite, almandine, gahnite, quartz, diopside, anorthite, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite for the Ena city Kawai mine, so those should probably be added/moved to that (reintroduced) locality page.

The aspidolite paper mentions wollastonite, dolomite, phlogopite, pargasite, sadanagite, titanite, calcite, scapolite, apatite, chlorite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite.

Hopefully this will help untangle things a bit!

On the subject of Gifu Prefecture, I notice that the co-type locality for proto-ferro-anthophyllite is given as Hirukawa, whereas the 2002 paper that describes it (J. Mineral. Petrol. Sci., 97, 127-136) is more specific, and gives it as Tawara (Tahara), Hirukawa-mura. Do you think it would be worth moving the TL from Hirukawa to Tawara?

I see also that the TL label for gadolinite-(Ce) has disappeared from the Tawara page, but for some reason it is still showing in the Hirukawa page further up the locality "tree". I don't know if this is just on my computer, but maybe you could double check it?

All the best

David

Thanks, David. Finally all fixed.
