Improving Mindat.orgWrong information given with christelite photo

15th Nov 2014 22:22 UTCJason Evans

The information with this photo is incorrect, it states it is from the ONLY locality, this is no longer the case as it has been found in Australia and also according to the locality map also at Lavrion district mines, Greece (which seems to be the only locality shown on the map)

That's a pretty old photo, so it was probably true when the caption was written.

True, but it is now incorrect info. It wouldn't be difficult to edit it. After all, that is one of the good things about Mindat is that info is kept up to date.

I would agree with you, Jason, in the case of Mindat's species and localities pages, which are (hopefully) continuously updated, but not necessarily always in the case of photo captions (although I'm sure others will disagree with me).

We've had a few cases in the past where a photo caption mentions whose collection the specimen is in, and then someone writes to us to complain, "That piece is now in MY collection, so the photo caption should be changed!". In that case our policy was that whatever was true at the time the photo was taken could stay on the caption, at the option of the photographer. We would of course insist that the photographer change errors in species identification, locality, size, colour rendition, etc. But (in my opinion) there would be some value in leaving be anything that could be considered "historical" information.

Point taken. I am still puzzled why only one locality shows up on the map, the one in Lavrion, and that is the only locality which does not even have a photo of a specimen from there. maybe that is something that could be fixed?

" I am still puzzled why only one locality shows up on the map, the one in Lavrion, and that is the only locality which does not even have a photo of a specimen from there. maybe that is something that could be fixed?" We can only post localities to the maps where we know what the lat/long of the locality is. The San Fransisco Mine and Block 14 opencut do not have a lat/long specified. If you know what these are, you could add them to the locality files.
