Improving Mindat.orgWeird Cookie Problem

17th Feb 2015 23:55 UTCFrank N Keutsch

Hey,

I am having an odd problem. When I try to login into my mindat account I get the message:

Please note, you must have session cookies enabled to log into mindat.org, you currently have session cookies disabled or blocked. Please ensure your privacy settings are set to either 'Always Allow Session Cookies' or to add www.mindat.org to the list of sites that are allowed to create cookies. You may also need to change the security/privacy settings on your internet security software and/or firewall to prevent cookies being blocked.

However, I have Cookies enabled (set to "Allow from websites I visit"). When I look at all the cookies it lists mindat as one of the sites that Safari has cookies.

The irony is that I have to use a different email to post this, as I have an account...

Any ideas are greatly appreciated! Probably I am doing something stupid...

Thanks!

Frank

well. My only solution to computer problems of restarting the computer fixed it. How come I always feel stupid dealing with computers...

I am having the same problem on my Chromebook, but no problem from my PC. Identical settings. Using Chrome browser, allowing cookies, and even added www.mindat.org to allowed list. Still can't log in on the Chromebook... and yes, I did restart it too.

18th Feb 2015 04:05 UTCMatthew Stanley

After shutting down my Chromebook two more times, it finally allowed me to log in. What a weird bug.

18th Feb 2015 06:26 UTCUlf Nyberg

The same bug even here. The problem come and go, but

nothing to care on. After a while all is ok again. :-)

Yep, we noticed this strange cookie behavior as managers on the 14th of feb,

and it seems to be getting worse...

but we can't fix it ; Jolyon has to look into it when he returns from Tucson

The present solution is:

Try several times, including restarting the browser.

It always worked so far.

18th Feb 2015 10:50 UTCAntoine Barthélemy Expert

I had the problem yesterday with Firefox, and it was still there this morning.

I got rid of it by cleaning my history (including cookies, temporary files and so on).

18th Feb 2015 15:14 UTCNelse Miller

Keep having the same set of problems. I can't log in, either told my user name or password don't match (and won't let me change either) or the cookie message others have seen. Hope he gets back soon!

Clear the recent history of your browser should resolve the issue.

18th Feb 2015 16:26 UTCAlfredo Petrov Manager

Clearing the history does not work for me - I'm still locked out.

18th Feb 2015 16:34 UTCReiner Mielke Expert

Seems to be a totally random thing because I just logged in no problem.

18th Feb 2015 17:18 UTCJosé Zendrera 🌟 Manager

From two days ago often I have the same problem described by Frank in the first post.

But sometimes it works, that's why I can post this now...

PD: I use Mac OS X 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.10 (6534.59.10)

18th Feb 2015 17:59 UTCReiner Mielke Expert

Now I can't log in? Cookie problem shows up.

19th Feb 2015 06:32 UTCMatthew Stanley

The only thing that has worked consistently for me is turning the computer off and on at least once, sometimes several times.

19th Feb 2015 16:48 UTCRonald J. Pellar Expert

Closing the browser and re-opening has worked for me. The problem may be related to browser history and how cookies are stored?

19th Feb 2015 18:34 UTCFreddy Frog

I have done a "Restart" on my Mac - didn't work. I also did a "Reset" of my browser (Safari), which clears the history and allegedly erases all website data, but that didn't work either; I'm still incapable of logging in to Mindat. So, sorry to anyone who is waiting for me to approve photos and the like... nothing will get done for a while. :-(

NB: This message was really writen by Alfredo Petrov, but when I tried to post it, I got the following message: The name you entered is already registered by another user. If you are that user, please login. Otherwise, please use another name. ...so not only can I not log in anymore, I can't even post to the messageboard using my own name :( :(

19th Feb 2015 18:55 UTCFreddy Forsterite

I should point out that restarting the computer and resetting my browser made my situation worse than it was before! I could post to the messageboard under my own name before, but now I'm in the catch-22 situation of not even being able to do that because I have to log in to post, and I can't log in.

Between this problem, constantly turning Chinese and photo search bugs etc I'm about to start a campaign to bring back the old Mindat!

19th Feb 2015 22:20 UTCReiner Mielke Expert

We need the option of using "Mindat Classic"

19th Feb 2015 22:31 UTCAlfredo Petrov Manager

Finally, I get in, by upgrading to the latest edition of Safari... I guess I was on last year's version. :-S

OK, the "cookie problem" in my book has officially become wierd - 20 minutes ago I tried to log in with no luck, but just now when I tried, no problem. I did nothing in the interim except have a cup of coffee & a cigarette - was it the cigarette or the coffee??!?

edit: This time I logged off, spent 2 hours indexing & catalogueing some specimens, came back and logged on with no problems......

20th Feb 2015 03:31 UTCTimothy Blackwood

Hi all,

I've experienced the "cookie message" numerous times. Personally, I'm with Ralph. I'd gladly have the old, "classic" Mindat back. The only question now is: Have so many changes been made that putting things back to the way they were before is no longer possible? :-S

Best wishes,

I'd like to say that I'd rather look to the present and the future than back to the past... I believe that within a few days everything will return to normal :)-D

There really isn't any going back. In addition to the numerous programming changes, we also upgraded the server and changed hosting providers.

I kind of suspect that it may have to do with either the use of subdomains or that Cloudfair has gotten a bad page into the cache.

20th Feb 2015 12:04 UTCRalph S Bottrill 🌟 Manager

I wasn't really serious, just extremely frustrated, its wasted a lot of our time but I know we cannot go back and unscramble the egg, much as most of us would like to.

21st Feb 2015 04:06 UTCJim Wilkinson

Today (2/20) when I try and log in I now get this message and I have not changed any settings---

I have not been able to exactly identify the problem but I was able to reproduce it on Firefox on my Mac. Having reset the cloudflare caching system the problem seems to have gone away. Is anyone still experiencing this?

21st Feb 2015 10:31 UTCVik Vanrusselt Expert

Jolyon,

I'm still having this problem trying to log in using (my default browser) Google Chrome version 40.0.2214.111.

The problem seems to go away using Internet Explorer 9 though.

I just tried and it was the 5th attempt before log on worked. I am using Windows 8.1 fully patched and IE 11 fully patched.

Hi Jolyon

I can now log in - using Chrome Version 40.0.2214.115 m so maybe the issue is fixed?

Thanks

Best wishes

Interestingly enough, when I receive the cookie message, I can come to the Messages section and it will appear as if I have logged in. In fact, it knows who I am because my name appears at the bottom to author a message. However, I am unable to access my Mindat pages.

same problem here.

Restarted browser, then erased all data from my chrome browser (history/cookies/cache..), then erased all data from internet explorer browser, then launched a disc cleanup (from the start menu), then launched a data erasing from my firewall program, then reseted my modem box, then restarted the computer. And I'm back. But I think what really helped was mostly restarting my modem box (as I had already done the same without restarting the modem box and the problem wasn't solved when restarting the computer)...unless it's just a random error and I've just been lucky enough to be able to login this time.

I have done what I can to try and fix this now - any further problems and I will need to spend some time on Wednesday next week to look at it more seriously.

Closing and re-opening the IE browser used to work before but does not now. I tried Chrome and it didn't work either but going back to IE did work. My attempts to log in with IE appears to be random!

I tried to log in again around 14:00 EST and still got

the cookie message

Clearing your web browser cache has done the trick for me. Using Safari on a Yosemite Mac and Chrome on XP, clearing out the cache resolved the cookie problem. The Chinese issue remains.

I have very occasionally found the same, in all cases if I completely close down the browser (all windows not just the tab) and restart the browser it works again. It happens far too infrequently to be able to figure out what's going on
