Improving Mindat.orgFluorite from Florence mine, Cumbria

20th Feb 2015 17:36 UTCTimothy Greenland

The photo #501452 in the gallery for Florence mine, Egremont, Cumbria, England appears unlikely to come from this locality. The colour is too purple, the matrix is unlikely and the crystals show numerous interpenetration twins which, in my experience, is not typical for Florence mine. I believe it is a Weardale specimen. A quick test for fluorescence might settle it - it it fluoresces bright blue it's likely Weardale and surely not West Cumberland Iron Field...

Cheers

Agreed, most definitely not from Florence. The colour and the twinning are a dead give-away I would also take issue with the description of Rob Lavinsky's hematite (photo 182664) as being an old time piece from the late 1800s/early 1900s. The no. 1 shaft wasn't actually sunk until 1915!

A complaint on 501452 had already been sent before - no reply apparently.

Now changed to Weardale and made user-only (comment added to caption).
