Improving Mindat.orgproblem with picture of Joseph Tyrrell

26th May 2016 20:49 UTCTony Peterson Expert

The mineral tyrrellite is named after Joseph Burr Tyrrell, who had a brother, James William Tyrrell. The named-after picture is titled James Burr Tyrrell (?!?!), and the image does not closely resemble that of Joseph Tyrrell at the Tyrrell Museum website (Joseph needed glasses and usually sported small oval wireframes). I have uploaded this image to Mindat:

the real Joseph Tyrrell

It is also on other websites and appears to be public domain.

I would urge replacement of the "James Burr Tyrrell" photo with the one I have supplied, unless its uploader can positively attest to its accuracy (but I suspect it really is of James) and if not, it should be politely purged.

I am in possession of reproductions of numerous photos Tyrrell took during his expedition through the barrens via Dubawnt Lake, from the Canada Archives. Although collections of Tyrrell's photos can be found online, they seem not to have any from that expedition, which passed through a remote area I worked in early in my career. I will endeavour to digitize some of these and upload them soon.
