Click here to view Best Minerals M , and here for Best Minerals A to Z and here for Fast Navigation for finished Best Minerals articles.
Can you help make this a better article? What good localities have we missed? Can you supply pictures of better specimens than those we show here? Can you give us more and better information about the specimens from these localities? Can you supply better geological or historical information on these localities? After each set of pictures there should be some descriptive text. If none appears it means that we need someone to tell us about the specimens from that locality and something about the geology of the occurrence.
The name monazite is used here for all members of the monazite group. "Monazite", without a elemental suffix, was once the accepted name for all material in this group, regardless of the REE-bearing components' relative abundance. The suffixes were added when the naming convention for all REE-bearing members was devised and implemented.
Most "monazite" is monazite-(Ce), the La-, Nd-, Sm- and Gd-dominant members are all very rare.
Monazite often contains small amounts of U and/or Th, making it radioactive.

First of all we have four monazites for the moment: -(La), -(Ce), -(Nd) and -(Sm). And you should to state, that their abundance in rocks is Ce>>>La>>Nd>Sm. In other words, from 1000 monazites, 990 will turned out Ce-dominant, 9 La-dominant, 0.9 Nd-dominant and may be only 0.1 Sm-dominant.
