Hello friends,
I would appreciate very much if somebody can give me information as to how and where I can buy some bulk pure CINNABAR Mineral.
Who ever gives this information to me would be rewarded with some thing great to remember.

Are you looking for actual mineralogical cinnabar in some concentrated ore form, or would the synthetic pigment, vermillion suffice? Single crystal or powder? Some massive cinnabar specimens might be available from a few localities.

There probably are some University researchers out there who have prepared single-crystal synthetic cinnabar also; one would have to do a detailed search. The chemical, HgS, mercuric sulfide is readily available from Alfa Aesar.

I don't know his name, but here is a picture of a buyer of pure cinnabar in a little town near the cinnabar mines in China. The bowl is full of cinnabar "gravel".

Thanks Rock for yet another interesting picture. I still wonder what the purpose of it is- as a pigment, it has been superseded by other compounds (and in any case, synthetic HgS would probably be better). My basic worry is it is eventually destined for human consumption in some manner- cinnabar itself isn't so dangerous, but intake of mercury in any form is not especially healthy.

I am not sure that getting a few kilos of Spanish cinnabar is very realistic unless you are willing to pay quite a high price for it. There are still quite big reserves there, but there is to the best of my knowledge no current exploitation, and so production is nothing. Prices for material on, for example, eBay are relatively high for what are essentially ore samples compared to Chinese material.

I think there is still a certain amount of cinnabar lacquer work done in China, and that undoubtedly is where some of it will wind up. In addition, little square flat cleavage "tiles" of cinnabar are sold in the Chinese medicine market. Cinnabar has a very good cleavage, and from some of the larger crystals 1cm plus size? are broken down into little flat cleavage tiles. These are placed wall to wall in little bamboo double sided glass topped boxes that look a little bit like Reker mounts boxes. The ones I saw in china are small perhaps 3x3 inches, perhaps a little more. There were ones with large cinnabar tiles and ones with smaller ones. The larger ones were all over $100 each. I bought one of the ones with smaller cinnabar cleavages for about $60. I was told that the a person would take one of the little tiles and put it in tea, and the tea then acquired "healthful properties" Eventually the cinnabar tile would turn black and then all the "energy" had gone from it, and a new tile would have to be added to the tea. I suppose I could try and run down a source for cinnabar gravel, But I am sure that the cost would be in the $100 a pound range, and I am sure that they would not want to sell a small quantity of it. Then the cost of making an air shipment would be a minimum of $200 to $300 alone. Almost certainly not worth the trouble. If you could deal directly with the guy in the picture you could probably buy the cinnabar gravel for less than $20 per kg. But that's just a guess. I did not question him about the price or what he was paying the miners for it.
