Can you help make this a better article? What good localities have we missed? Can you supply pictures of better specimens than those we show here? Can you give us more and better information about the specimens from these localities? Can you supply better geological or historical information on these localities?

Quartz
SiO2 trigonal

Here will go a good picture of a quartz specimen from Italy and general remarks about the quartz from this country.

Here are some url's to some of the better quartz specimens here on mindat that can be considered for inclusion in the article. These, in mosc cases are just for temporairy use untill we can get images of the much better specimens that are almost certainly out there. We should also consider that there are probably localities out there with fine specimens that are not even mentioned on mindat. Also in some instances there are sometimes pictures on mindat, of specimens from a locality, but they were so ratty that I did not include them here, but there may also be relly good specimens from there that we should talk about in this article.

In my humble opinion for this site:
Margone, Usseglio, Viù Valley, Piedmont, this one is more appropriate and representative than others:

Simone, Thank you for your comment. We have not really started to write the Italian quartz article, mostly because no one has come forward to do the job. The images above were selected as representative images that have been uploaded to mindat and we know that there are many better specimens out there whose pictures would deserve a place in the article rather than those we have selected here. We also know that we have almost certainly overlooked some worthy Italian quartz localities that should be included here. There is also the probability that some of the locality referenced cited above may not be correct and will need to be changed. When the article goes under construction, we hope you will help us with your knowledge of Italian quartz.

Hi Rock,

Dosso dei Cristalli in Valmalenco should be on the list as well: [www.mindat.org]
In the past very nice Quartz specimens have been found there, our Italian friends can surely give info on this locality.

Cheers

Hi Rock and Harjo:
Dosso dei Cristalli is, nowadays, an exhausted locality. There are several specimens in private collections and Museum of Lombardy, but here on Mindat there are no very representative specimens of the former "glory" of this site. Some nice specimens came out in the past ten years but not to the average of the great specimens that gave this locality his fame.
Good choises for others localities, like Selvino. Good and representative crystals. In Selvino is possible ti find very strange and deformed crystals but not beautiful like the little "diamonds"
For Northern Italy I suggest another locality, a recent discover by Fabio Brignoli

Hi Rock,

i can help you about quartz of Sardinia, specially of north Sardinia, smoky-quartz from Gallura (120 Kg) and amethist from Osilo.
Are you interested in historical and geoligical news and photos ?

Antonio, Why don't you write up something about the quartz localities from Sardinia following the format we are using for these articles and lets see what it looks like. Just put it into one of the thread posting here, and when it is in shape we will transfer it to the Italian section that is under construction above.

For Dosso dei Cristalli I propose this crystal: not an important specimen (it's a crystal without matrix) but the habit is representative of the locality

Simone,
Thanks for pointing out those localities and their images. I am sure that when the article on Italian Quartz is written that most of them will be included. Can you tell us something about the localities like their geology and how many specimens they produced and when, what the bes specimens looked like etc.?

Re: Quartz, Italy

I know no well the geology of Carona: the minerals are founded in quartz veins included in great masses of ardesia; it's an alpine type veins and other minerals are pyrite, marcasite, some brookite and anatase
Dosso de Cristalli is a well known locality for some of the most important quartz druses founded in Lombardy in the past; today some good found but it's an exhausted place; the specimes I've posted are not of the same average of the most famous specimes but are representative for habit crystal and some phenomenon like phantoms; other minerals often present are magnesite, aragonite in quartz veins (and sometime it's (was) possible to find some albite; the geologi of the site is composed by quartzite veins in serpentine masses; in the serpentine it's possible to find some nice crystal of pyrite.

Simone

PS
Selvino is a curious place for other types of quartz crystals: very stranges and deformed, not beautifuls like the other perfect type but of some interest. Some exemple:

From Dosso dei Cristalli the only good specimen from my collection for their peculiar characteristics:

very particular and not so common cluster of tabular crystals

and double terminated crystal with complex termination but interesting only for the site
