Quartz, Australia

Many thanks for the info - the specimen I have was apparently from the roadworks, but I am not sure how far from the mine this is - should it be a separate locality? (or sublocality?). We are happy to see some more photos, especially anything a bit different.

Re Terip Terip - I am not familiar with these, though I have seen other good crystals from Victoria (eg Beechworth). I presume this site is in the Strathbogie Ranges? We welcome any photos.

As Ralph states, Torrington is in Clive county, not Gough ... BUT the various mine localities appear to be listed in the correct counties - it is just that Torrington is the nearest town - hence some mines may be in Gough and some may be in Clive - - so don't move the mines ... just that Torrington can only be in one. Perhaps we need a "Torrington district" under Gough County to cater for this

I have been working on the adamite article, fiddling around with the formatting of the images etc. I noticed that there is a locality for adamite listed for which we have no pictures. The article I site in the Mineralogical Record is by Peter Elliot. Do you know him well enough you could ask him about the possibility of uploading some images of the Beltana mine adamites? His pictures in the Min Record article look better than those we have in the adamite gallery that were uploaded by Karl Volkman. If he seem amenable, you might ask for some images of hedyphane. His pictures in the Min Record also appear to be better than those we currently have.

Thats a nice amethyst crystal, why don't you upload it to Mindat. That way it would be accessible for us to us in the Australian Quartz article.

Hi ya Ralph, - havent been doing to much looking on Midat lately so this thread is a surprise. Do you and Rock want some help on other Species?? I have lots of other photos I have not yet uploaded - (not enough time)

Also do you want me to load up some more Quartz photos from around Tassie and some other Aussie localities on my site. I have some strange stuff from Keith Lancaster collection.

Also dont forget the SA Emita Stuff - just stunning

We would love more photos and info on a lot of different minerals and sites - its hard to know where to start. There are a lot of "best of" topics created now - I have done Crocoite, atacamite and Australian quartz - Rock may twist your arm to do something if you are not careful! If you have a favourite mineral that has a limited number of good sites you may want to think about it - its a bit of fun to get together .
Re quartz - have a look at what we have so far and see if you can help improve it with any photos and text? I am n ot familiar with Emita, but there are a lot of good locations in SA, also more in Qld, WA and NT that we have little on. And I am sure some of your Tas stuff would be very useful.

Regarding the pic of the Wyalong range NT amethyst..I have applied to upload pics to Mindat..However you can if you want, do any thing you think is fair with the pic to suit the purposes of the Aussie quartz section..
have just noticed a comment re Mt Elliot mine being an open cut..this not the case..it was mined using open stope methods and ore was hauled out using a decline road..The adit/portal is now sealed off to stop the more adventurous fossicker as even today amethyst is still every where..

I seem to recall a major hole in the ground there, but I may be getting confused now.
I have added your extra info and the photo, although it may be easier in future for you to add the photos and info yourself - that way you can edit things later.

Hi Ralph,,Thanks for fixing photo..The Elliot mine has always been an underground mine.The open stopes are huge and a miners headlamp beam cant reach the back of the stope.It is scary to see the size of the boulders at the bottom of the stopes that didn't fracture..The only large hole at Elliot was a recent subsidance on top of the old 1900's workings.The slip was about 30metresx 50 dia.

I was probably thinking of the Great Australia mine - it was a while ago
If you have any pictures of the mines they would be great to upload too - I had a lot of slides but they are a nuisance to scan.

Just saw the update you have done on the Australian quartz. Its great. I think I will soon be our of a job. Do you still need the list of Australian quartz localities and images I posted when I opened this thread? If not Ill just delete all that and tell them to scroll down to your growing article. I am not sure if I can delete my original post when I opened this thread without deleting the entire thread. Ill have to check on that. One way we could handle it would be to rename the original thread Quartz, Australia 2 and then create a new thread Quartz, Australia. You could write the little welcome blurb and transfer all the work you are doing on Australian quartz into that thread and then what ever posting you wanted to keep and then delete the original thread. This would put the Australian Quartz article at the top of the thread where it belongs.

Hey Rock,

I am into silly questions - and sadly I have a few sillynesses with my time. Silly me but I do three jobs, I look after an Airport terminal rebuild, run my business and tutor construction some evenings.

So to keep in good with my dearest ones (and stop the dog barking at me, by remembering my face) and so I can keep spending money on glorified concrete aggregate (not my description) I will limit my current input to adding some photos from my collection at the moment.

I reviewed my photo list of quartz etc and a number of photos are reasonable but can be improved, so i will retake before I post them.

I will work with Ralph off list on other Tas/Aussie stuff.
