Dimensions: 30 mm x 15 mm x 6 mm

A brownish doubly-terminated crystal of an unnamed metamict phase, a Ca-REE-silicate, designated as "LPC UK-7" found by me, in one of the nepheline syenite pegmatite dikes in the Larvik Plutonic complex (LPC) at the Tuften quarry, Tvedalen, Larvik, Vestfold , Norway.

A crystal (twinned?) of an unnamed metamict phase, a Ca-REE-silicate designated as "LPC UK-7" found by me in 1985, in one of the nepheline syenite pegmatite dikes in the Larvik Plutonic complex (LPC) at the Tuften quarry, Tvedalen, Larvik, Vestfold , Norway. The crystal has a pale brownish pulverulent alteration crust of calcioancylite-(Ce).

The UK-7 is studied by Malczewski et al. (2018).

Ice, H2O in Bamble

04107340014946603127158.jpg
Bamble, Telemark, Norway

Dimensions: 60 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm
Weight: 96 kg

A very common mineral in the nordic hemisphere: Ice.(See how to establish a large exhibition collection):he,he! Blocks approx. size given.
Historical pic. showing a worker placing fresh water iceblocks inside the storehouse. Pic. taken in wintertime. See the clarity of the ice! In the southern part of Norway ice export was a quite big industry around 1900 until gasoperated refrigerators were invented.
The winter 1895-96 almost 130 men worked in 20-25 weeks in this business. At the same time alltogether 52 iceponds and 101 ice storehouses operated in the same area. This season 125.000 tons of ice were produced into blocks, at a value of 0,5 million NOK. The export from this district counted for approx. half of Norway`s total ice export. So: times changes!

Largest Crystal Size: 140 mm

Large transparent hambergite xls in situ. Pic. taken by Denisa Poulová when visiting this famous quarry on 23. nov. 2013 with Lukáš Zahradníček and Øivind Sunde. Ingulv Burvald met those friendly people and showed them this very nice hambergite cluster.
He thanks Denisa and Lukáš for using this photo,- and also thanks to Øivind for finding his keys. See hammer as scale. The largest hambergite xl in the spray measures approx. 140 mm! White analcime xls also on the pic.

Photo by myself in a quarry close to the city Klaksvik on Bordoy Island a few years ago.
Showing two nice spheres of apophyllite crystals with chabazite-, heulandite-, and stilbite crystals also.
Size of each sphere is 4 cm.
One in my collection and the other one in my good friend Kjell Pettersen`s collection.

View towards Streymoy from Vàgar

Vágar, Vágar Region, Faroe Islands

Photo from my first trip to the Faroe Islands in august 2001 with friends from Telemark Geologiforening (our local Norwegian mineral society).
This is the Vestmanna strait under which a subsea roadtunnel connecting the two islands was under construction at the time.
Getting access to this tunnel resulted in fantastic specimens of most of the zeolithes on this archipelago.

"Skram"

02430180015665969084215.jpg
Gullnes Copper Mines, Seljord, Telemark, Norway

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Impressive "Skram" marks after medieval works within these mines.
Skram confirms the art of mining work with hammer and hand-chisel.
Width of picture approx. 50 to 60 cm.
Documents confirms mining activity allready in 1524 at theese hydrothermal chalcopyrite veins. The hey time was beetween 1540 and 1546. The site`s melting furnace could only produce an alloy of silver/copper which in time was transported south to the small vincinity of Herre, Bamble. Here another melting process was established by the king as a "Seigerhytte". This process resulted in the two endproducts copper and silver. The latter was sent to the city Skien where it was coined to 4 different values of which the most famous Norwegian coin,- the "Gimsøydollar" was invented.
