5L8-ED2Fluorite CaF2
Carmeuse Lime & Stone Inc. Quarry, Millersville, Sandusky County, Ohio, USADimensions: 5.2 cm x 5.2 cm x 3 cm
This is a small cabinet specimen of fluorite from the Carmeuse Lime & Stone Inc. Quarry, Millersville, Sandusky County, Ohio. I acquired the specimen from Joseph Vasichko at the 2024 Columbus mineral show. Joe collected the specimen at the quarry.
Fluorite specimens from this quarry tend to be unique as they are almost always found in very small vug pockets less than 10 cm. The only color of fluorite found in this quarry tends to be a pale-yellow color, though many are slightly stained orange due to iron oxides. This specimen has a 2.2 cm yellow cube, but unfortunately it was contacted during crystallization and is an incomplete cube.

0J3-FGYCalcite CaCO3 , Marcasite FeS2
Wysong Stone Company Quarry, Lewisburg, Preble County, Ohio, USADimensions: 4 cm x 1.5 cm x 1.5 cm
This is a miniature specimen of calcite with marcasite from the Wysong Stone Company Quarry, Lewisburg, Preble County, Ohio. I acquired the specimen from Joseph Vasichko at the 2024 Columbus mineral show. Joe collected the specimen at the quarry.
This specimen contains microscopic scalenohedral crystals of clear, transparent calcite with brown calcite phantoms and associated marcasite crystals in a very small pocket in the dolostone.

DQU-61EMarcasite FeS2
Melvin Stone quarry, Crownover Mill, Pickaway County, Ohio, USADimensions: 2 cm x 1.8 cm x 1.5 cm
This is a thumbnail specimen of marcasite from the Melvin Stone Quarry, Crownover Mill/Williamsport, Pickaway County, Ohio. I acquired the specimen from Joseph Vasichko at the 2024 Columbus mineral show. Joe collected the specimen at the quarry.
A typical example of a marcasite nodule from the quarry. According to Carlson (2015, p. 216), these marcasites cover surfaces of iron sulfide nodules.

Y1P-VEYFluorite CaF2
Lafarge North America Marblehead Quarry, Marblehead, Danbury Township, Ottawa County, Ohio, USADimensions: 2.5 cm x 8 cm x 4 cm
This is a cabinet specimen of fluorite from the Lafarge North America Marblehead Quarry, Marblehead/Lakeside, Danbury Township, Ottawa County, Ohio. I acquired the specimen from Joseph Vasichko at the 2024 Columbus mineral show. Joe collected the specimen at the quarry.
The majority of the fluorite specimens I have seen from Marblehead are various shades of purple, from very dark to almost a lavender color. It is very common for fluorite crystals from the Marblehead Quarry to crystallize in pockets that were fossil molds, such as this specimen.

The majority of the fluorite specimens I have seen from Marblehead are various shades of purple, from very dark to almost a lavender color. Less common colors included colorless and iridescent. This specimen came from a single boulder and have a reddish orange color due to a thin film of iron oxide. The iron oxide can be removed through washing, but your left with colorless cubes and I think the red color actually adds to its overall attractiveness.

4NX-22GMagnetite Fe2+Fe3+2O4
Empire State No. 4 Mine, Balmat, Balmat-Edwards Zinc Mining District, St. Lawrence County, New York, USADimensions: 1 cm x 1 cm x 1.1 cm
This is a thumbnail specimen of magnetite from the Empire State No. 4 Mine (frm. the Zinc Corporation of America [ZCA]), Fowler Orebody, 2500 Level, Balmat, Balmat-Edwards Zinc Mining District, St. Lawrence County, New York. I acquired the specimen from Jay Medici at the 2024 Columbus mineral show.
Here is a nice example of one Balmat's famous cubic magnetites that was mined in the 1990s when the Empire State No. 4 Mine was operated by the Zinc Corporation of America.

EAV-DR8Fluorite CaF2 , Calcite CaCO3
Stoneco Auglaize Quarry, Junction, Paulding County, Ohio, USADimensions: 2.5 cm x 2 cm x 2 cm
This is a thumbnail specimen of fluorite with minor calcite from the Stoneco Auglaize Quarry, Junction, Paulding County, Ohio. I acquired the specimen from Jay Medici at the 2024 Columbus mineral show.
A very cute thumbnail of two intergrown fluorite cubes with well-defined phantoms. The calcite on top of fluorite is also double terminated.

WT3-CJMFluorite CaF2 , Celestine SrSO4
Stoneco White Rock Quarry, Clay Center, Allen Township, Ottawa County, Ohio, USADimensions: 8 cm x 14 cm x 6 cm
This is a cabinet specimen of fluorite and celestine from the Stoneco White Rock Quarry, Clay Center, Ottawa County, Ohio. I acquired the specimen from Tom and Pam Kottyan (The Mineral House) at the 2024 Columbus mineral show.
A classic combination from Clay Center of brown cubic fluorite crystals with a dark brown color with bright white bladed celestine. The specimen originally came from a large boulder and had to be sawed down to reveal the pocket inside. Some collectors don’t like the “boxy” look, but I really enjoy it.
