Kasompi Mine (Menda Mine; Kasompi Hill), Swambo, Central area, Katanga Copper Crescent, Katanga (Shaba), Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaïre)

6.2 x 3.6 x 2.6 cm. Kasompiite, as shown on the accompanying label, was the old name given to material from this mine now known to be the already named mineral species Glaukosphaerite. This is a rare copper-nickel carbonate, and few deposits produce beautiful examples. This is a large, attractive, velvety looking specimen rich with mattes of the ...

Malachite : Cu2[(OH)2|CO3]

Kasompi Mine (Menda Mine; Kasompi Hill), Swambo, Central area, Katanga Copper Crescent, Katanga (Shaba), Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaïre)

21.6 x 16.0 x 11.9 cm. This is a large plate that is remarkably undamaged and has TWO rows of stalactites (to 9 cm height) marching from left to right , one at the bottom and one row at the top. It is almost unbelievable that this could have been extracted with no damage of note, no missing major tips. The rolling texture of the piece is much more ...

Malachite : Cu2[(OH)2|CO3]

Kasompi Mine (Menda Mine; Kasompi Hill), Swambo, Central area, Katanga Copper Crescent, Katanga (Shaba), Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaïre)

9.7 x 9.7 x 4.7 cm. This is a sculptural specimen among my favorites that came out of a pocket last fall, showing some of the best chatoyancy we have seen in malachite since old Bisbee material of the early 1900s. The piece is composed of arcing, soaring clusters of needle-like malachite that curve gracefully together at their tips, and then ...
