Multiple photos availableAntillite : (Mg,Fe)3Si2O5(OH)4

Havana, La Habana Province, Cuba

8.1 x 7.1 x 6.9 cm. This is still a poorly categorized mineral, originally described from near Havana, La Habana Province, Cuba. It is a magnesium iron silicate that is not yet formally approved as a species pending more work. This specimen is very rich with the material, dark black masses within the lightweight matrix. Note late 1800s AE Foote ...

Havana, La Habana Province, Cuba

Antillite is a poorly categorized mineral that is currently not valid with the IMA. Still, I find this to be a neat, historical specimen. A 9.5 x 5.6 x 4.8 cm matrix is rich throughout with small micaceous masses of antillite. There is an old label from A.E. Foote glued to the back of the specimen.

Guachinango deposit, Matanzas Province, Cuba

Yes, this specimen is aesthetically challenged (it's essentially road tar!) but it's from Cuba (how many Cuban minerals do you have?), and it's from the recently dispersed Philadelphia Academy collection.

Specimen size:8.9 x 7.9 x 5.0 cm (3.5 x 3.1 x 2.0 inches)

Calcite : CaCO3

Guachinango deposit, Matanzas Province, Cuba

4.4 x 1.3 x 1.1 cm. Looking very much like a calcite from Dal'negorsk, this colorless, glassy and gemmy calcite crystal is instead from Cuba. A rare occurrence! I have seen very, very few. Small cleave on the back of the termination, but still displays well from the front and is important for the locale. Ex. Carnegie Museum Collection.

Copper : Cu

El Cobre Mine, Santiago de Cuba, Sierra Maestra Mts, Oriente Province, Cuba

A 5cm specimen of native Copper from Santiago, Cuba, most likely from the El Cobre Mine. Ex. Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences #181 (dating it most likely to mid-1800's). Label shows the donor as a Dr. Mease, who I believe to be Dr. James Mease (1771-1846), a member of the American Philosophical Society. If this is true this specimen ...
