Almandine : Fe2+3Al2[SiO4]3

Asheville, Buncombe Co., North Carolina, USA

Many crystals of wine-red almandine garnet crystals in white quartz and green muscovite matrix. Some crystals are incomplete. The contrast of the garnets against the matrix is very aesthetic. Overall size of mineral specimen: 8x5x4 cm. Size of individual crystals: 4-8 mm.

Dravite : [Na][Mg3][Al6][(OH)3|OH|(BO3)3|Si6O18], Muscovite : KAl2[(OH)2|AlSi3O10], Quartz : SiO2

Swan Prospect, Buncombe Co., North Carolina, USA

10cm wide specimen consisting of parallel crystals of dravite tourmaline with muscovite on massive quartz. Dravite crystals were origianally covered by a single book of muscovite that was carefully removed to expose the crystals. Collected and photographed by Keith Wood.

Dravite : [Na][Mg3][Al6][(OH)3|OH|(BO3)3|Si6O18], Muscovite : KAl2[(OH)2|AlSi3O10], Quartz : SiO2

Swan Prospect, Buncombe Co., North Carolina, USA

3.3cm dravite crystal with muscovite, in quartz. Crystal was exposed by carefully removing enclosing muscovite. The crystal has shallow brown internal reflections. Collected by, in the collection of, and photographed by Keith Wood.

Dravite : [Na][Mg3][Al6][(OH)3|OH|(BO3)3|Si6O18], Muscovite : KAl2[(OH)2|AlSi3O10], Quartz : SiO2

Swan Prospect, Buncombe Co., North Carolina, USA

6.0x2.8cm group of subparallel dravite crystals with muscovite, on quartz. The crystals were exposed by carefully removing enclosing muscovite. This is a typical habit and association for tourmaline at this site. The crystals have shallow brown internal reflections. Collected by, in the collection of, and photographed by Keith Wood.

Kyanite : Al2[O|SiO4]

Thomas Mine (Balsam Gap kyanite location; Parkway kyanite location), Buncombe Co., North Carolina, USA

Several portions of kyanite crystals exhibiting peculiar angled color zoning. The axes of all the crystals are aligned parallel. Blue coloration is due to the presence of ferric iron in the crystal lattice. Collected by, photographed by, and in the collection of Keith Wood.

Kyanite : Al2[O|SiO4], Quartz : SiO2

Thomas Mine (Balsam Gap kyanite location; Parkway kyanite location), Buncombe Co., North Carolina, USA

13mm tall free standing gemmy kyanite crystal on quartz. The kyanite crystal exhibits a variety of exceptionally well-formed terminal faces, unusual for the species. This crystal did not form in a vug, but rather was exposed when the enclosing quartz was broken open. Collected and photographed by Keith Wood.

Kyanite : Al2[O|SiO4]

Thomas Mine (Balsam Gap kyanite location; Parkway kyanite location), Buncombe Co., North Carolina, USA

3.0x2.2cm transparent partial kyanite crystal in quartz with minor biotite. The kyanite is perfectly transparent to a depth of 2.3mm where incipient cleavage on a twinning plane is present. This piece is typical of the high quality of crystallization exhibited by much of the kyanite at this location. Collected by, in the collection of, and ...

Kyanite : Al2[O|SiO4], Quartz : SiO2

Lookout Mt, Montreat, Buncombe Co., North Carolina, USA

17x7x5cm specimen of kyanite in quartz. The kyanite crystal is 15cm long and exhibits weak folding as well as splitting along cleavage planes. Obtained from float downslope from the kyanite outcrop. Collected by, photographed by, and in the collection of Keith Wood.
