Kakanda South Mine, Kakanda deposit, Kambove, Central area, Katanga Copper Crescent, Katanga (Shaba), Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaïre)

In the past few years the mining area in Shaba has "reset" the standards for this species. The miniature shown above is outstanding. A very large and sharply formed crystal for the species, this measuring 1.6 x 1.5 x 1.3 cm in size, is set nicely upon a 4.5 x 3.5 x 3.0 cm matrix. The crystal is cubic, with octahedral modifications on the corners. ...

Dolomite (Var: Cobaltoan Dolomite) : (Ca,Mg,Co)CO3

A block of tan matrix is covered on one surface with a druze of gemmy electric pink coboltoan dolomite. The colour is extremely intense and is complimented by the sparkle of the individual crystal faces - approximately 2mm across.

Dolomite (Var: Cobaltoan Dolomite) : (Ca,Mg,Co)CO3

Kakanda South Mine, Kakanda deposit, Kambove, Central area, Katanga Copper Crescent, Katanga (Shaba), Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaïre)

A piece of matrix is covered with a druze of white quartz and dispersed rhombs of pink cobaltoan dolomite, the main crystal being 1cm on its edge. The lustre and colour of the crystals is good; there appear to be staged growth or redisolution/etching causing some of the crystal faces to te irregular slightly clouded.

Intense pink color from the cobalt content distinguishes this cobaltoan dolomite from Zaire. Not just a druse, but nice-sized crystals with good luster! 5.5 x 3.9 x 2.1cm
