Chalcocite : Cu2S

Mammoth Mine, Mount Gordon, Gunpowder District, Mt Isa - Cloncurry area, Queensland, Australia

3.2 x 2.3 x 2.2 cm. This textbook crystal is the most robust crystal BY FAR that I have seen from the find, with a sharp, fat wedge-shaped form, and complete terminations on all sides. In fact, it is even a floater! The bottom is microcrystallized, and so this is literally complete all around. This is a world-class chalcocite! For habit, however, ...

Chalcocite : Cu2S

Mammoth Mine, Mount Gordon, Gunpowder District, Mt Isa - Cloncurry area, Queensland, Australia

3.0 x 2.9 x 2.4 cm. A killer toenail-sized specimen with sharp, 2 cm crystals sticking straight up and out, very 3-dimensional. The front and sides are pristine; there is only one break in back, on one of the smaller rear-facing crystals.

Chalcocite : Cu2S

Mammoth Mine, Mount Gordon, Gunpowder District, Mt Isa - Cloncurry area, Queensland, Australia

3.6 x 2.7 x 2.7 cm. This specimen is a competition-level, complete-all-around STUNNING miniature, with a cluster of three intergrown crystals to 3 cm long, perched on a small knob of matrix. It is STUNNING, visually, both for the lustre and the sharp geometry of the piece. Complex beveled terminations throw off reflections in every direction. ...

Chalcocite : Cu2S

Mammoth Mine, Mount Gordon, Gunpowder District, Mt Isa - Cloncurry area, Queensland, Australia

3.5 x 3.3 x 2.1 cm. SUPER SHARP crystals to 1.7 cm, with a wet-looking, waxy lustre, jet out from this knob of matrix to make a very "sexy" miniature specimen! This is a stunning piece, with 3-dimensionality and aesthetics that make it stand out among any chalcocites. But for a new locale, it is all the more special.

Mammoth Mine, Mount Gordon, Gunpowder District, Mt Isa - Cloncurry area, Queensland, Australia

3.6 x 2.5 x 2.0 cm. A sharp heart-shaped twin (1.4 cm), of rare habit, surmounts this small miniature matrix specimen. There is damage elsewhere on the specimen and also a small tiny ding on one side of the twinned crystal, but it is still a great little reference specimen for this new find, showing a super twin habit!

Chalcocite : Cu2S

Mammoth Mine, Mount Gordon, Gunpowder District, Mt Isa - Cloncurry area, Queensland, Australia

7.0 x 6.0 x 3.0 cm. Thin, sharp crystals to 1.5 cm on copper-rich sulfide matrix makes for a dramatic display! Large crystalline chalcocites, on hard rock matrix, are just not common from any locality. This piece has some trivial damage when inspected closely, but most crystals are to 1 cm and in good shape.

Chalcocite : Cu2S

Mammoth Mine, Mount Gordon, Gunpowder District, Mt Isa - Cloncurry area, Queensland, Australia

2.1 x 2.0 x 1.9 cm. A stunning thumbnail featuring several 1 to 1.2 cm crystals merging into a hoppered growth atop. These are SHARP in form, as sharp as if they were carved. This is a great thumbnail, almost world-class but for a small, tiny broken point to the lower-left of the cluster atop.
