Manhattan-Staten Island Water Tunnel Rock Dumps, Staten Island (Richmond Co.), New York City, New York, USA Almadine, Biotite Mica. 3 cm by 4 cm. Joseph Polityka collection. These crystals were self collected circa 1967 at the dump near the Goethals Bridge on Staten Island (Goethals was one of the engineers who built the Panama Canal). The location is now extinct. A water tunnel was dug into the Manhattan Schist between Manhattan and Staten Island. |

A sharp 1.5 cm almandine garnet, in matrix no less, form this classic New York City area locality that is now long gone. New York City area garnets are classics, but it is hard to find one to own.
