Cassiterite : SnO2, Pyrite : FeS2

Ivigtut Cryolite deposit, Ivittuut (Ivigtut), Arsuk Firth, Arsuk, Kitaa (West Greenland) Province, Greenland

Dark brown, twinned cassiterite crystals with pyrite. The specimen was originally covered with fluorides and siderite, but I etched these minerals with Hcl to free the cassiterite crystals. The specimen is in the microcollection of OT. Ljøstad.

Multiple photos availableChiolite : Na5Al3F14

Ivigtut Cryolite deposit, Ivittuut (Ivigtut), Arsuk Firth, Arsuk, Kitaa (West Greenland) Province, Greenland

Fragment of transparent ice-like monograin of chiolite. When seeing on the specimen begin to understand, that name for chiolite(=snow-stone from Greek) was mixed up - this mineral much more similar to ice, than cryolite (=ice-stone from Greek). But on the type locality chiolite really is similar to dirty snow in March... Associating mineral is ...

Chiolite : Na5Al3F14

Ivigtut Cryolite deposit, Ivittuut (Ivigtut), Arsuk Firth, Arsuk, Kitaa (West Greenland) Province, Greenland

An EXCELLENT, lustrous, translucent and blocky specimen of the VERY RARE mineral chiolite from Greenland. Chiolite is related to cryolite, but is much rarer and only occurs as massive material. This is a valuable piece of gem rough weighing 28 grams. 3.6 x 2.1 x 1.7 cm
