Zanett tunnel, Grizzly Bear Mine, Ouray, Ouray District (Uncompahgre District), Ouray Co., Colorado, USA Acanthite with rhodochrosite, quartz, and pyrite. Field of view is 9.4 mm. The acanthite seems to grow on native silver after the specimen is collected. My theory is that the presents of sulfides (pyrite) produces this growth. Specimen collected by Dorothy Atlee at the Zannet tunnel; Ouray, Colorado, USA and photo by Phil McCollum. |

2100 Level, Campbell Mine, Ouray District (Uncompahgre District), Ouray Co., Colorado, USA 2.3 x 1.4 x 1.3 cm. Here is a fabulous thumber for either a thumbnail collector or a Colorado collector: a very sharp TWIN of chalcopyrite with a coating of chalcocite which gives it its blue and gold iridescence. This is from the classic Ouray mining district, and is an old-timer and very hard to find now! |
