Anatase : TiO2, Titanite : CaTi[O|SiO4]

Jones Mine, Zirconia (Tuxedo Station), Henderson Co., North Carolina, USA

2.5 x 1.9 x 0.7 cm. Xanthitane is a very uncommon varietal name (not listed on Mindat) for this anatase and is very rare and very unusual. It is a soft, friable, yellow earthy material as alteration pseudomorphs after titanite. So, this is a specimen of anatase (xanthitane) pseudomorphing two titanite crystals. In this particular tan, flattened, ...

Zircon : Zr[SiO4]

Freeman Mine, Tuxedo, Henderson Co., North Carolina, USA

Doubly-terminated zircon crystal that fluoresces yellow under UV illumination. The crystal appears fully crystallized on all surfaces except where it intersected another zircon. Overall size of mineral specimen: 11x8x8 mm. Size of individual crystals: 11 mm.

Zircon : Zr[SiO4]

Tuxedo, Henderson Co., North Carolina, USA

Large, doubly-terminated zircon crystal without matrix. Fluoresces yellow under UV illumination. The crystal appears fully crystallized on all surfaces except where it intersected another zircon on the rear. Mounted in acrylic box for protection. Overall size of mineral specimen: 17x9x8 mm. Size of individual crystals: 17 mm.

Zircon : Zr[SiO4]

Tuxedo, Henderson Co., North Carolina, USA

An unusual specimen of zircon on massive quartz from the old mines in Tuxedo, North Carolina. This is one of those eastern U.S. pieces that are rarely seen with this type of sharpness and luster. The crystals, to 2.1cm on edge, have an interesting purple-brown color with as glassy a luster as a zircon could have. Minor damage to a couple of ...
