Adularia : KAlSi3O8, Microcline : K[AlSi3O8], Quartz (Var: Milky Quartz) : SiO2, Biotite, Gadolinite

Petrick pegmatite, Kingsland Granite Company quarry (Petrick quarry), Llano Co., Texas, USA

Freshly exposed 2 cm specimen of adularia exhibiting its characteristic blue schiller. A small group of 5-8 mm gadolinite crystals can be seen in the lower right.

Anatase : TiO2, Zircon (Var: Cyrtolite) : Zr[(SiO4),(OH)4]

Badu Hill pegmatite, Llano Co., Texas, USA

4 cm pistachio-green wedge of an unusual radioactive anatase after titanite pseudomorph from the Badu Hill Pegmatite in Llano County, Texas. The dark inclusions above my thumb are perfect 1-2 mm radioactive reddish-brown crystals of zircon, var. cyrtolite. Even though XRD analysis identifies the mineral as anatase, SEM-EDS indicates substantial ...

Anatase : TiO2, Zircon : Zr[SiO4]

Badu Hill pegmatite, Llano Co., Texas, USA

A nice crystal of Uranian-Anatase PS after Titanite. A small, brown crystal of Zircon (var. Cyrtolite) is in the center of the crystal. Self collected in March of 2006 by David Aldridge. Specimen is about 3x1.5x1cm in size.

Anorthite (Var: Labradorite) : (Ca,Na)[Al(Al,Si)Si2O8]

Woodward Ranch, Alpine, Brewster Co., Texas, USA

Labradorite, occurring as phenocrysts in the volcanic rock, can be found weathered out in loose fragments on hillslopes at the Woodward Ranch. Some pieces, like these, are transparent and large enough to facet into gemstones. The pieces shown here range in size from 1-2 cm, and have a good light honey-yellow color.

Azurite : Cu3[OH|CO3]2, Malachite : Cu2[(OH)2|CO3], Cuprite : Cu2O, Fluorite : CaF2, Quartz : SiO2

Pavitte Copper prospect (Bailey Place; White Eagle mine), Burnet Co., Texas, USA

3 x 5 cm specimen of copper ore from the abandoned Pavitte Copper/Silver Prospect (White Eagle Mine) in Burnet County, Texas. The colorful copper mineralization occurs in a matrix of milky quartz and colorless fluorite. The quartz fluoresces pale blue under SW UV while the fluorite glows a warm butterscotch yellow.

Beryl : Be3Al2Si6O18

Undisclosed pegmatite locality, Burnet Co., Texas, USA

Hexagonal fragment of a large weathered beryl crystal from a new pegmatite locality in Burnet County, Texas. SEM-EDS analysis indicates that the green coloration is due to trace amounts of iron. This specimen was collected from a crystal pocket with several other mating fragments in September of 2006.
