Anorthite (Var: Labradorite) : (Ca,Na)[Al(Al,Si)Si2O8]
Woodward Ranch, Alpine, Brewster Co., Texas, USA Labradorite, occurring as phenocrysts in the volcanic rock, can be found weathered out in loose fragments on hillslopes at the Woodward Ranch. Some pieces, like these, are transparent and large enough to facet into gemstones. The pieces shown here range in size from 1-2 cm, and have a good light honey-yellow color. |

Woodward Ranch, Alpine, Brewster Co., Texas, USA A spectacular large-cabinet specimen of calcite crystals on a basalt matrix, from the Woodward Ranch, shows a beautiful rose-pink fluorescence under shortwave UV. The specimen is 18 x 13 x 6 cm in size. Calcite from Woodward is commonly fl. pink to red, SW and LW, but is rarely found in good crystals. |

Woodward Ranch, Alpine, Brewster Co., Texas, USA From the east side of the Woodward Ranch, a spectacular large-cabinet piece featuring fluorescent calcite crystals with jasper (quartz) in a cavity in basalt. The piece is shown under shortwave-UV light and measures 19 x 10 x 6 cm. The calcite crystals are fl. red, and the jasper fluoresces a deep green. The white-fluorescing material is ... |

Woodward Ranch, Alpine, Brewster Co., Texas, USA A piece of transparent (optical) calcite, from the Woodward Ranch, shown under SW ultraviolet light. The calcite has a nice pink fluorescence, and the specimen is situated over white text on black paper with the words "DOUBLE IMAGE". The white text is fl. also, and when transmitted through the calcite the good double-refraction image of the text ... |

Calcite : CaCO3 | |
Woodward Ranch, Alpine, Brewster Co., Texas, USA Calcite from the Woodward Ranch is fairly common filling cavities in basalt. Sometimes, like this piece, the calcite is the water-clear optical variety that can produce a double-refraction image. This piece measures 5.5 x 3 x 3 cm, and has a deep ruby-red fluorescence (SW). |

Calcite : CaCO3, Opal (Var: Opal-AN) : SiO2·nH2O
Woodward Ranch, Alpine, Brewster Co., Texas, USA This specimen features calcite, fl. red, with a seam on the side containing hyalite (common opal) which fluoresces a bright green. The photo was taken under shortwave UV light, and comes from the Woodward Ranch near Alpine, Texas. The size of the specimen is 7 x 6 x 4 cm. |

Woodward Ranch, Alpine, Brewster Co., Texas, USA Calcite crystals in a calcite and basalt matrix, partly surrounded by pink chalcedony. The size of the specimen is 18 x 10 x 6 cm, and the individual crystals (simple rhombohedrons) are 0.5-1 cm on an edge. The calcite is fl. bright orange-red SW, chalcedony is fl. deep green SW. |

Woodward Ranch, Alpine, Brewster Co., Texas, USA Calcite crystals in a cavity in basalt, surrounded by pink chalcedony. The calcite crystals are fluorescent orange-red SW, and the chalcedony is fl. deep green SW. The overall size of the specimen is 11.5 x 7 x 3 cm., and the calcite crystals are simple rhombohedrons, up to 1 cm on an edge. To see this specimen in ordinary light, look at the ... |

Calcite : CaCO3, Chalcedony (Var: Carnelian)
Woodward Ranch, Alpine, Brewster Co., Texas, USA This specimen is mostly calcite, frosty-white to almost transparent, that contains coatings and "bleb"-like inclusions of bright orange-red carnelian. This piece is back-lit to show the effect of the carnelian in the calcite, and the overall size is 5.5 x 5 x 2 cm. |

Woodward Ranch, Alpine, Brewster Co., Texas, USA From the Woodward Ranch in the Big Bend area, this specimen features calcite crystals in a cavity in basalt. In this photo, the crystals are shown under shortwave ultraviolet light and display an attractive orange-red fluorescence. The crystals, simple rhombohedrons resembling cubes, range in size from 0.5 - 1.5 cm across and the overall size of ... |
