Calcite : CaCO3, Quartz : SiO2

Lunenburg, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, USA

A thick crust of druzy calcite covers quartz points to 1". At first I though I found prehnite because of the green color. Then, I thought the calcite was green because of environmental exposure that promoted algae growth, but this specimen was too freshly exposed for that. There is a rather sharp demarcation between the green and tan areas of ...

Calcite : CaCO3, Quartz : SiO2

Lunenburg, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, USA

Thick crust of druzy calcite over quartz points to 1". Some areas of the crust are green, others tan, and I don't know why. There is no underlying green mineral (such as prehnite). In the center of the specimen the shape of a large underlying quartz termination can be seen. Specimen is 6" wide.
