Anatase : TiO2, Millerite : NiS, Chalcopyrite : CuFeS2, Quartz : SiO2
US 27 roadcut, Halls Gap, Lincoln Co., Kentucky, USA A tiny brown tabular crystal of anatase from Halls Gap. This mineral occurs in geodes within a seam of glauconite. It requires 40x magnification to be seen well. Specimen in the collection of the photographer Alan Goldstein. Field of view =2 x 3mm |

Baryte : BaSO4, Pyrite : FeS2, Chalcedony

US 27 roadcut, Halls Gap, Lincoln Co., Kentucky, USA Barite is a very rare mineral at Halls Gap (one out of 1000 geodes examined with a microscope). Yet it is in larger crystals found in geodes 8 km (5 miles) away. The field of view is about 3 x 3 mm. Specimen in the collection of photographer Alan Goldstein. |

Calcite : CaCO3, Millerite : NiS
US 27 roadcut, Halls Gap, Lincoln Co., Kentucky, USA Calcite crystals can occasionally be found suspended on a crystal of millerite. This crystal is about 1 mm wide. When photographed, they appear to float in the air. Specimen G311 in collection of photographer Alan Goldstein |

Calcite : CaCO3, Chalcedony
US 27 roadcut, Halls Gap, Lincoln Co., Kentucky, USA Calcite is common at Halls Gap. Crystals are negative rhombs which are often intergrown to the point of forming hemispherical masses. This geode is about 6 cm wide and is covered in a variety of quartz called chalcedony. Specimen is in the collection of, and photographed by, Alan Goldstein. |

Cerussite : PbCO3, Galena : PbS, Millerite : NiS, Quartz : SiO2
US 27 roadcut, Halls Gap, Lincoln Co., Kentucky, USA Cerrusite is VERY rare at Halls Gap. It only occurs on the rare microscopic galena crystals. This is only one of two cerrusites found over the course of examining over 1000 geodes for my Min Rec article. Specimen G473 is in the collection of, and photographed by, Alan Goldstein. |
